Probate anxiety

MrTch · 16/06/2026 20:39

Probate was applied for at the beginning of June. The estate consists solely of savings, with no property involved, and there is a valid will that clearly sets out how the shares are to be distributed.

From what I have read online, probate can take up to 12 weeks to be granted. Has anyone been through a similar situation, and if so, how long did it take in your experience?

Mine came back super quick. Less than a fortnight for a simple estate (no IHT).

GrillaMilla · 16/06/2026 20:43

Mine only took a couple of weeks too, I was surprised

It’s causing me soo much anxiety, as I suffer from that.

Same here, but very easy case too

Did you do it online or on paper? I applied online recently and the grant was issued in three days. I was not expecting that!

Just the waiting, as I really could do with some money at the moment.

I’m not sure my relative applied.

Are you the executor?

We applied online. It came back a week, even after they questioned something.

We did Probate last April, it took 7 weeks and 2 days (and included a 2 bed house and savings).

If you are a beneficiary only, you have to wait. The executor is under no obligation to talk to you until all the process of probate, outstanding bills and final paperwork has been completed. Then any inheritance will be distributed. You must wait your turn.

I am going to be harsh here. Your anxiety is your problem. Do not hassle the executor.

MrTch · 17/06/2026 04:16

I’ve not chased them, I won’t at this stage.

My husband is a beneficiary from a relative’s will. Probate took around 14 months, and we’re still waiting for the money to be paid out almost two years on from the death. One property (which has been sold) and some savings and investments. There was a codicil to the will which I think delayed the grant of probate.

it seems to vary massively but I don’t have much experience of this,

It is called the executors year for a reasons they must ensure that all debts are settled before distribution to beneficiary’s can occur so it could be some times yet before you get any funds.

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 17/06/2026 06:54

4 working days here but we applied online. There was a will drawn up by a solicitor and I’d already paid the whacking great inheritance tax bill.

I understand there is a big difference in turnaround time between paper and online.

PropertyD · 17/06/2026 18:15

I am also going to be harsh here. You sound like you just want the money and you are spiralling out of control. Beginning of June is 17 days ago not including weekends. Has the application be confirmed as received.

scarletthollie5 · 17/06/2026 20:41

Applied last week had a message asking for death certificate is this normal ?

Also executors are advised to wait for 6 months after probate is granted before distributing proceeds of estate because the will can be challenged or claims made within 6 months of probate being granted.
