I need to get a Letters Of Administration document, could someone point me in the right direction pls? Every time I type this in google ‘power of attorney’ comes up. However I need this to get hospital reports for my father who passed away last year.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Did you dad have a Will, or did he die without one (intestate)?

Letters of administration I think are what you usually get if you apply for Probate via the intestacy route?

https://www.gov.uk/applying-for-probate

This has the details, including how to apply and whether or not it is appropriate to apply. If he owned less than a certain value of money/assets you then don't have to apply.

We found it was surprisingly speedy going through the intestacy process - too about 3 working days after application to get the letters of administration.

Editing: probably someone may already have done the application though, if your dad died a while ago? So you may need to find that and see if they have the relevant documents or even ask them to apply to the hospital on your behalf.

Applying for probate

Find out if you need to apply for probate to deal with the estate of someone who’s died. Discover how to apply for probate or letters of administration and what to do if there’s no will.

He didn’t have a will & nor did he have any family except me. So I’m guessing no one else would have been able to apply for this? As I was his own family & next of kin.

Letters of administration is basically probate for a person who didn’t leave a will https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/apply-for-probate-by-post-if-there-is-not-a-will

Ah okay makes sense, thank you

Okay. I agree no one else could have applied except for you in those circumstances. Was his estate (money and assets) worth less than about £30k? If that's the case you often don't need to apply for letters of administration, which might explain why you haven't yet.

You may be able to get around the need for them but the form wasn't too bad so it might be one where the easiest thing is to apply for the letters of administration and be done with it.

You need to apply for probate, and you need to use the inhertance tax checker first, it will be amongst the links others have posted. I was able to do everything online and it came through quickly. There may be fees to pay.
