Credit card chargeback after company closed before collection of ordered tiles

I bought goods over the phone with my credit card, from a local company.
( I did this as the website didnt have enough of the product, so I rang them and they confirmed the order for the amount I needed). I paid at the time of the order, receiving a call back the next day saying the goods were available for collection. This was mid week so I said I'd be down there on Saturday morning.
On arrival the store was shut with a notice on the door saying they had gone into liquidation.
I've logged chargeback with my credit card co and have sent in a copy of the invoice, emails and a photograph of the door notice.
The company still shows as active on companies house. Google maps shows all branches as permanently closed. There have been no social media or press articles about the company closure. Will the credit card co be able to verify this in my favour?
As the products were bathroom tiles I've had to buy elsewhere due to a contractor being booked. Really just need the money back! I am hoping the staff didn't take the payment knowing they were closing.
Is there anything else I can check? Or any other advice? Thanks.

How much was it for? It's up to the individual bank but most will credit the money back to you and then look into the issue with something as black and white as this I wouldn't expect any issues.

Was the value of the transaction over £100?

If your item (or total order) cost between £100 and £30,000, section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act makes your credit card company jointly responsible, so yes you should get 100% of the money back.

Just put in a chargeback claim with your CC company. It should be easy.

Have you phoned your credit card company to see if the transaction has gone through?

NineteenForever · 17/05/2026 08:12

Thanks- it was £260. The transaction has definitely gone through. I was just a bit concerned the company records at companies house still showed active and thought that might cause problems or delays. CC co say they'll get back to me- first response- in 14 days which will be next week as I submitted it a week ago.

With the proof you have I would be surprised if you had any issues. What bank is it? Some are better than others with these things

If they have only just gone into liquidation it will be weeks before the companies house website is updated. The process is not quick.

Thanks, I was wondering how long it might take to update that. Good to know this is not unusual.

Tesco are usually quite good for chargebacks as ive had to do a couple, its quite straightforward if you fill in the form on the website they get back to you pretty fast.

It may take quite a while but you should get the money back eventually. Legally the credit card company are liable so you could sue or go to the financial ombudsman if necessary.
