Can I claim from a dealer after paint damage during washing?

Took my car to a main dealer for some work and as part of their service they pressure wash it . A large amount of lacquer peeled off and they say it’s not their fault as stones over time damaged the bonnet and it came up when they washed it . Took it elsewhere and it will cost £1440 to repair , is there any thing I can claim to get the money for that ?

How on earth did stones cause that
it looks like it’s been sheared off
id push them for money to and it right - you’ve gone to a main dealer not some dodgy bank street garage

Will be amazed if you have a case to be honest.

stonechips leave a hard edge that can easily lift the paint.

what age and mileage is the car?

If they agree that it wasn't like that before then they should at least pay part of the repairs. I guess their argument is that it was going to come off pretty soon and they just hastened it, so they shouldn't put you back to a totally new bonnet at their cost.
I think they were ill advised to pressure wash cars but I know they are quite fashionable. It just feels a bit "manly" in the same way that cutting a cake with an axe would be... No idea what's wrong with a decent brush, car soap and a hose pipe.

Everything. You don’t wash a car with a brush FFS.

@Emmmreallt I would persist with them. You would have to convince a small claims court that on the balance of probabilities the jet wash caused the damage. It does not look like stones have caused it to me a lay person, and what’s more it sounds like a made up defence.

If you go to CAB on line there is a lot of advice on how to pursue a claim. A letter before action may get the result you require.

My car is 13 years old (low mileage for its age) and the rear bumper is starting to do this. It's common for the lacquer to break down over time, general wear and tear and where certain parts of the car stay wetter after washing or when it rains. A little bit of water under the lacquer can cause a large area to peel off. A mobile place quoted £400 to re-lacquer the bumper (I think it's 2 coats) and an accident repair place quoted £750 for the same job.

it is a 9 year old cat that’s done 47000 miles .
