Do I need to tell a new employer about a driving ban?

Hi all,

I have a question re driving ban.

I exceeded 12 points for band A speeding - this was for exceeding 20 MPH, not high speed. DVLA have said that this will incur a magistrate appearance and six months disqualification. I plan to appeal this as I have due to some personal care responsibilities.

The complicating factor is that I'm moving to a new job (currently awaiting contract, which should be with me in a week or so) - the job doesn't require me to drive but I am not sure whether I need to disclose this in good faith to them.

Does this not have to be disclosed to my employer because it is a civil not a criminal conviction?

What do you reckon?

DH got done for doing 23 round Clapham Common at 5.30am. He did a speed awareness course. I’m very aware of the limit as a result and know there are cameras everywhere. And I don’t break the limit…. I’m that driver who crawls along the south circ with the limiter set. I agree it’s a pain but you should not take 4 slaps on the wrist to get the message.

Thanks - I will definitely be buying a speed limiter. To the OP who posted about London, it is a real issue around here.

It's really not an issue. I'm in Wales where they changed pretty much every 30 to a 20 a few years ago. It's really not difficult to stick to the speed limit. It's annoying, and in some places a bloody stupid limit, but really not difficult.

If you've managed to get caught speeding 4 times, then you're obviously choosing to speed pretty much constantly, and you deserve your ban.

I can see why you would react like that but honestly you need to live in north London to see the problem. I realise there are solutions and will take them now but there’s still a big difference between speeding very fast and slightly exceeding a very low speed limit. There have been parliament petitions to at least increase it to 25mph in London. I’ve been honked at by people behind for going too slow, there are traffic snarls due to this. That said I know that law is law and I’ll have to pay the price. But honestly some people on here are holier than thou and it makes me wonder how they really live their lives - sorry to say this but really…

There absolutely is, and the penalties reflect that as you know. Nobody has suggested that you've committed a serious crime. People have taken issue with you downplaying it on the grounds that more serious offences exist.

It'd be holier than thou to give you a hard time for doing it once. But being incredulous as to why someone would keep doing the same thing while knowing the consequences certainly isn't.

And when you respond by minimizing it and making excuses, you only reinforce their first impression.

The 20mph speed limits have been around in London for over 15+ years though, so it’s not like they’ve crept up on you?

I used to work in London back in the 00’s and 10’s. They were bringing in the 20mph limits then and I remember the flashes going off for some unsuspecting drivers.

i mean they’re big yellow boxes, not exactly subtle! See one, slow down. The signs are also pretty clear.

eventually you learn where the traps are as well, so again getting caught 4 times in 3 years seems like a lack of planning and ability to learn from your mistakes.

My partner got a speeding ticket as he was distracted and didn’t see the speed sign - it was a road we drive on a lot so just assumed it was the same limit. He did a speed awareness course and is now super vigilant and hasn’t had another, he recognises that it was his own fault. Went up to London to see his dad, roads around there have suddenly gone to 20mph so we just drove 20mph. We have a lot around the small city I am in and I find driving in Cardiff to visit friends painful with the low limits, but I just drive like a snail as it is the rule! I almost got a ticket when tired but thankfully realised my speed and slowed down just before going round a corner and passing the police with a speed gun - that shocked me into being more aware!

If you got them all in a week I would be sympathetic or if you had two in three years but to have four separate ones does make me wonder exactly how observant you are! Please tells me you don’t use your phone, eat or apply make up in traffic as they are also offences!
