Told my probation will be extended but then terminated

I was called to a probation meeting and was told that HR would be there because my line manager had agreed to extend my probation. During the meeting line manager said she'd decided not to extend probation and was terminating instead.

That's a fucking crappy thing to do, isn't it??

It is but unfortunately it’s perfectly legal. Sorry that happened to you.

dadtoateen · 24/01/2026 19:22

Not really crappy sadly and perfectly legal.

without more info can only assume the company have decided it’s no longer worth continuing with your employment for whatever reason

Nothavingfunrightnow · 24/01/2026 19:40

Thanks for the replies. I accept that the company does not feel I'm the right fit for the role.

Who “told” you in the first place?

Nothavingfunrightnow · 24/01/2026 19:51

My line manager told me in an email, confirming what she had told me verbally prior to that.

In an email she explicitly confirms

“I will be extending your probation”?

So your line manager wrote in the email that she would be extending your probation. Explicitly that?

Nothavingfunrightnow · 24/01/2026 20:02

"Due to deciding to extend, I have invited HR to the meeting", said line manager two days before our meeting.

Whether she did or not makes no difference legally,

Serafee · 24/01/2026 20:04

Whether she did or not makes no difference legally,

Agreed
but it would be weird

how long after that did you meet?

I disagree, it happens all the time. Line manager wants to wimp out of a difficult conversation and more senior manager says no, just get rid.

I didn’t say uncommon
I said weird

Two days?

Caughtletren · 24/01/2026 20:16

Theunamedcat · 24/01/2026 20:13

Two days?

Either change of mind or
A chat with HR and agreed that best not to extend when very unlikely to take forward anyway or
a wimp

user405927 · 24/01/2026 20:24

Were they extending it rather than it finishing?

Was it coming to an end and you would still be working there and not on probation any more and they were extending it because yoi hadn’t ‘passed’ the probation?

Nothavingfunrightnow · 24/01/2026 20:55

Extending because I had not passed probation though I still had a month to go.

OP posts:
BillieWiper · 24/01/2026 21:02

I guess 'extend' meant for the duration of your tenure after they'd explained you wouldn't be staying? As in the opposite of 'passed'?

It sounds confusing and crap but you had a lucky escape x

TheFireHorse · 24/01/2026 21:04

Oh sorry OP. May be legal but still shitty.

Hopefully you'll get a new and better job soon. Flowers

Scared of the incoming labour government rules so getting rid in advance is my guess. Hope you find something else soon, good luck!

Nothavingfunrightnow · 24/01/2026 20:55

Extending because I had not passed probation though I still had a month to go.

Will you have to finish the remaining original probation period? Or are you out immediately?

Kimura · 25/01/2026 07:01

Your manager possibly thought you'd be capable of passing with the extension and made a judgement call, but got overruled by someone more senior.

I've never extended a probationary period. If someone isn't a good fit after 6 months I don't know how that's supposed to change in another 4 weeks.
