Mum left the house to as long as me and sister need to live there, otherwise it is split 6 ways. Should i be paying my brothers rent which they say their entitled to or should we be sharing cocts to maintain the home

What are the actual terms of the will.

ComtesseDeSpair · 19/01/2026 17:40

As above, it depends on what is stated in the will. If this is a life interest trust, it should set out whether any rent is to be paid to the other beneficial owners and who is responsible for ongoing maintenance. If there’s no provision for rent then your siblings can’t make you pay any; likewise if it’s silent on maintenance then you can’t make them contribute to what you want to do.

Depends on the wording in the will but generally no, a life tenant does not pay rent, although they would be expected to make sure the property remains (if it already is) in good habitable condition.
Any capital expenditure (urgent repairs, fire insurance etc) is the responsibility of the residuary beneficiaries equally, not least in order to maintain it's value. You can't force them to pay though.
It's disappointing for your brothers that they have to wait for their share of the inheritance while two of you get a free house but presumably your mother had her reasons for doing this.

If you are not paying rent, make sure you save up and leave ASAP.
