DD's first passport application

Squintpinkies · 15/12/2025 09:04

Banging my head against a wall and half needing to vent so I can clear my head and get this sorted.
Applying for DD's first passport, managed to get the 15 month old to sit still long enough with a white background to get an acceptable passport photo. Found a non-related person that has known us long enough yet has a job in a field that the passport office accepts that can confirm we are who we say we are. Sent off original birth certificate (Aberdeen birth, Scottish parents and living in Scotland) and even wedding certificate only to be told that I do not have enough evidence of my name change following marriage. I added husbands surname as a middle name in lieu of changing my surname, that is the only change and my driving licence changed no problem with wedding certificate as proof years ago (2019) apparently wedding certificate is only proof for surname changes according to the passport office and they want additional proof. Scotland doesn't do deedpoll and I was told wedding certificate was enough when we got married so I don't have anything else to send. And they still have our wedding certificate anyway so how I am meant to magically produce this further evidence of MY name change for my daughters passport??

Thank you for reading my frustrations, now off to find a solicitor to see if I have to change my name to my name.....

Sorry no help
. My dd's was rejected as only 1 of her ears was visible.....

IceIceSlippyIce · 15/12/2025 09:20

What name is on your passport currently?

Chersfrozenface · 15/12/2025 09:20

OP, did you change the name on your own passport?

Could that be the problem?

Anyway, you can ask the Passport Office for advice - details here https://www.gov.uk/passport-advice-line

My passport does also need to be changed, however had to go with the name on her birth certificate. Can't change mine until I get documents back either. Not left the country in over 7 years so was never a priority. Definitely wishing I changed mine first now though.

Probably worth getting copies of certs and doing yours now, then using that as more proof

Either that or do a statutory declaration. That's relatively simple.

It'll be because your name change on marriage isn't as simple as changing your surname. Anything that's now super simple and straightforward throws up issues with them.

DappledThings · 15/12/2025 09:36

So your name was Jane Smith and you now consider it to Jane Green Smith but haven't changed your passport.

Can't you just apply for her passport with your name as Jane Smith and change yours to Jane Green Smith later?

Sausagescanfly · 15/12/2025 09:45

Can you send a certified copy of your driving licence? Otherwise you might need to change your passport first.

I changed my name in a very slightly unconventional way when I got married, a bit like yours. I got a bit of grief from banks and the NHS completely refused to change it to the name I use, though I suspect that was the individual administrator, rather than a blanket rule. Later on, DBS were also a bit funny, they refused to allow me to put the actual name I use as my married name on my DBS form, which rather defeats the object of a DBS check.

The most helpful was the passport office. Someone phoned me to check that I really mean what I had written, but the just went ahead with what I had asked for.

Why as a middle name and not as part of surname?

Could you reapply with
Jame Marie as first and middle and Green Smith as surname?

Squintpinkies · 15/12/2025 09:51

Thank you @Chersfrozenface I had tried them which is how I found out they only allow wedding certificates as surname changes. Never said anything about my passport but not much help for what other documents I could send. Not even when I offered to send my driving licence.
Almost feels like punishment for keeping my surname 😂

Thank you, i'll look into Statatory Declarations @MannersAreAll

I think the problem is that you've added a middle name, rather than changing your surname, OP.

From what I read, adding a middle name or double-barrelling surnames after marriage means having to do a deed poll or statutory declaration.

NaranjaDreams · 15/12/2025 12:00

Yeah the issue is that you’ve added a name, not that you’ve changed/not changed your surname.

Sesame2011 · 15/12/2025 12:14

Ahh interesting to read this and sorry the process is so frustrating.
We have just applied for our DDs first passport too. Also Scottish birth/parents/residence.

I have posted our documents today. They asked for her birth certificate and "1 of her parents birth certificates". So I sent mine. My own passport and birth cert are in my maiden name but babys birth cert has my married name as her last name. Wondering if we will have issues?

Her birth certificate will have your maiden name on it and link them all together so you should be fine.

The issue is the Op has added her husband's name as a middle name and the computer system will simply see that as a new name appearing and need "proof" of it in the same way it would if she decided to randomly add Mary/Barbara/Sarah as a new middle name.

My surname was double barrelled from birth with a unique local history which I am very sentimentally attached to which is why it wouldn't have worked to add to it but wanted a nod to Husband in some form.

Contacted solicitors so waiting to hear back about statatory declaration. Thanks everyone 🤗

Hello, just to put an update here incase anyone else happens to have similar circumstances. Passport application has finally been approved. Managed to contact a solicitor to witness and stamp a Statatory Declaration for me which I sent along with my driving licence which seemed to do the trick. Unclear is the driving licence was necessary but I chucked it in anyway.

Thank you for your help and comments 🤗
