My partner was involved in a hit and run. The other vehicle struck him and drove off. He didn’t have dashcam. We posted on the community Facebook page and no witnesses have come forward.

We done a drive around and there are two public space cctv cameras that won’t have captured the incident however will have captured the vehicle in question.

The police told my partner there is nothing they can do as there’s no evidence. They said they won’t look at the public space cctv as it hasn’t captured the incident.

Is this accurate? Surely there’s something they can do to try and identify the vehicle? The damage isn’t extensive (knocked off wing mirror and scratched door). We are in Scotland. Thanks

From experience even when I had camera footage of a biker hitting by car and driving off without giving details, the police will do nothing. Leave it to your insurance company.

Nope unless its captured theres nothing that can be done. Someone reverse into me in a car park. Went through insurance she denied it, i said she reversed she said i went into back of her. She was going to win, until I got the footage from car park. However it didnt show her reg just the car type and colour. The insurance was going to dismiss it until I went crazy and said we have both confirmed we were there at that time that date in those cars and youre telling me you wont use it? In the end they accepted it. But it was a fight

Its not worth it to submit or trace it. If it shows regs, you could ring insurers and say this is the reg but if they denie it theres nothing you can do

An elderly neighbour was a victim of a hit and run recently, we had....

  1. Two independent witness
  2. CCTV of the actual collision
  3. The registration of the offending vehicle
  4. Three CCTV cameras showing the offending vehicle leaving, including damage and the drivers face.

The police declined to investigate on the basis of "a lack of evidence", when pushed they said they wouldn't investigate any further because no-one was injured.

My advice is, expect little from the police, take it up with your insurance, and get front and rear dash cams for next time.
