Wrongly issued speeding fine

My partner has received a speeding fine letter through the post today. The letter confirms their correct registration/make & model of their vehicle.

There's only one problem - The alleged offence took place last week, on a day on which my partner was working from home with me. And while they admittedly did pop out for 20 minutes to grab lunch, I doubt they'd have driven fast enough to complete the roughly ten hour round trip from where we live to the small village in South Wales where the camera was located 😅

Our issue is - the form they've sent only gives you the option to admit liability, give the details of someone else who is liable, or state that you did not own the car at the time, non of which apply to my partner.

Neither of us have had to deal with anything like this before - Is it a common/simple thing that can be sorted out with a phonecall, or are we about to have a lengthy dispute process on our hands?

A couple of years ago DS got a speeding fine from Hull, which is the other end of the country from us. Luckily, his car was in overnight at our local garage at the time. So you're not alone! I think maybe the reg number had been misread. Anyway, he appealed and it was all sorted very easily. We were able to get the garage to confirm our story. Can you ring or email them?

Maybe cloned plates. This is on the increase apparently.

There's a number that they're going to ring tomorrow.

Thankfully they work for a govt agency and were on a video call at the time of the 'offence', so they have cast iron proof that it's a mistake. It just seems very odd that there's no option to state this on the paperwork provided!

Could be a cloned plate. Phone and speak to them, see what evidence they have. It might be fairly obvious from heir photos/video that it’s not your partner’s car or him driving.

I imagine there’s no option for that on the paperwork because more people would try their luck ticking “mistake” than would call to try and argue it was a mistake.

I had a similar experience, I had to provide evidence that it wasn’t me or my car. I was able to provide a credit card receipt that I was somewhere else. Randomly & at the time it felt unlucky - my husband had reversed into a pole a couple of days before so we able to also provide evidence our car was damaged unlike the one on the photo.
