Self certifying copy of POA

Roystonv · 27/09/2025 14:27

DH & I are getting ready to self certify some copies of our POA's so that our DD has some 'in stock' when we need her to act (it is expensive to get copies from OPG and local solicitors charge a lot to certify - even just getting one page photocopied at a shop is 30p). I know there is a phrase we need to use and understand that we can use a stamp to write this so it is correct each time. We are intending to do this. We then add our signature etc. My ? is on looking at each page there seems to be very little room at the bottom for all this to fit in. Can anyone help and do add anything if I have got it wrong. Many thanks.

How to certify a copy
Write the following text on the bottom of every page of the copy:

“I certify this is a true and complete copy of the corresponding page of the original lasting power of attorney.”

On the final page of the copy, you must also write:

“I certify this is a true and complete copy of the lasting power of attorney.”

You need to sign and date every page.

Yes there isn't much room so you have to squeeze it in.

What I do professionally speaking if I don't have a stamp, is take a photocopy of the LPA and then just print the statement onto each page (once you've lined up the formatting!). You'll still have to sign each page.

Could you p/copy at, say, 90% of the original to give a little more space if it is needed?

No it should be a proper copy. You can also set up an online attorney account with the OPG.

You can’t self certify. It has to be someone unrelated and should be authorised to do so. The LPA has to be signed on every page. Costs £40 - get it done properly so your daughter doesn’t have any issues in future.

You can confirm that a copy of your registered lasting power of attorney (LPA) is genuine by ‘certifying’ it if you’re still able to make your own decisions.

Thank you.

Thanks. We do understand what we are doing and how to do it but as dogsandhens said the space they leave hardly allows you to fulfil their requirements. Does it have to be in exactly the same place on every page, can you stamp over some of the 'waffle'. Seems weird it's a useful option but no area dedicated to it.

Agreed.

There are many peculiar things about the system!

I think every time I used the POA for DM I sent it electronically. Never had copies. No one wanted paper copies. Every page was scanned.

Edited

The online system is relatively new so not all institutions etc accept an online copy or have the systems in place. Well worth still having a certified copy handy.

@Dogsandhens I obviously had a certified copy and this was scanned as required. Was required this way for everyone. It’s a modern world here!
