Does everyone open packages on the doorstep as the courier waits?

I’m talking bathroom cabinets, that sort of thing.

The T&Cs say you have to do that before you sign for a delivery! I can’t see DHL standing there as you go get scissors!

A cabinet arrived 7 days ago, intact packaging. Our plumber just opened it and one of the mirrors is broken.

Obviously we’ve emailed with photos, but we have no chance, do we?

I’ve never done that in my life!

Dabberlocks · 12/08/2025 15:34

I have only ever done that when receiving large items like a new fridge or washing machine.

purplecorkheart · 12/08/2025 15:34

No, where I am the couriers mainly just leave it outside your door and take a picture. They are gone before you can open the door.

I wouldn't write off hope yet. Most reputable businesses would send out another one.

dogcatkitten · 12/08/2025 15:36

Normally you have time to check things, even if you do open the package on the doorstep you might not notice damage or missing parts until you try to assemble things. I've got refunds for damaged goods in the past. Seven days is a bit of a long time, but nothing to lose in complaining.

thebraveryofbeingoutofrange · 12/08/2025 15:37

If you get no joy from the company, leave a review on trustpilot and other social media. It sometimes makes them more forthcoming. Worked for me a couple of months ago.

Thumbcat · 12/08/2025 16:30

You’re within your consumer rights to ask for a refund or replacement despite what they put in the T&Cs. If you get no joy then contact the citizens advice consumer service.

bge · 12/08/2025 16:32

No I’ve never done this. I had a smashed mirror delivered by evri recently - John Lewis sent me another (using their own staff) and took the smashed one away. No quibbling

Fordian · 12/08/2025 17:29

Thanks everyone. They have asked for more photos rather than dismiss us altogether, which might be positive!

Never done that. Couriers aren't going to wait while you get it unpacked and checked. Are DHL aware of these terms and conditions, I wonder?

OliveHenry · 12/08/2025 18:11

I have been known to write "Uninspected" or "Unopened" as well as signing my name, if it says something about the condition on the bit of paper they wave at you!

jetlag92 · 12/08/2025 18:12

I write 'not checked" and then sign for delivery.

FloweringBuds · 12/08/2025 18:14

Never in my life. I've had my share of broken items. I contact company and they sort it.

pontivex · 12/08/2025 19:53

Standard consumer rights for you to get a replacement if a delivery arrives broken. Nothing to do with signing or not signing the delivery. The company have to get it to you intact.

OnTheBoardwalk · 12/08/2025 20:04

Only once for pre assembled, very heavy and very big chester draws 🤣 that said check goods on delivery

I’d paid extra for delivery to room of choice upstairs. I opened it in front of them and the top was smashed. I rejected the item and made them take it back down stairs and back in the van there and then. They were fine about it

company replaced the item and again delivered to room upstairs. I said I needed to check it again (takes 5 mins) they threatened to call the police if I didn’t sign immediately

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 12/08/2025 20:18

If we have something expensive delivered that might be broken, I make sure that one of us makes a video of the other person opening it so that we can prove that it was broken before we opened it.

bloodredfeaturewall · 12/08/2025 20:20

no.
but the I usually write that inspection on delivery not possible, or similar.

itsmeafterall · 12/08/2025 20:27

I had broken mirror on a cabinet. Sent pics and they sent a replacement. We still Have the original broken one. ....

mondaytosunday · 12/08/2025 22:13

Yes if it’s a mirror. I’ve had this experience and my refund was rejected. So I told everyone (the tradesmen) to be sure to open every box before signing. Then the new one was delivered to a neighbour 🙄. Fortunately it was intact.
However I once ordered delicate ceramic wall sconces. Two arrived broken and I did not check them. Luckily it must have been a perennial issue as the company immediately sent out replacements without question.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 12/08/2025 22:16

If it's expensive I do, yes.
I did it the other day.
If they insist on a signature I'm checking it over first.

OnTheBoardwalk · 12/08/2025 22:22

oh I did as well when my PS5 went missing for 5 days during lockdown at the Amazon warehouse when you couldn’t get them for live nor money at the time. I wanted to check I wasn’t getting a brick

I think you will get your money back I hope you do. I would expect the plumber to order and check his own deliveries but that does absolutely depend on how you paying for it and if he got discounted items

Theunamedcat · 12/08/2025 22:23

I did when the box was damaged literally cardboard falling off the courier did a dump and run when I said I was checking it he tried signing for me but I had already clicked I had an issue before he clicked a "signature" on his tablet it was like a race to the seller 😂 basically the entire unit was mangled they had to collect it but the box was shredded so I taped it and left it for the courier I got a refund because they wanted to use the same courier they tried charging me delivery too but amazon said hell no and gave me all my money

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/08/2025 22:25

No, never. Can you imagine how long their round would take?

OnTheBoardwalk · 12/08/2025 22:28

@Fordian is obviously talking major packages from specialist delivery firms.

not some tat we’ve all got from Amazon

EveryOtherNameTaken · 12/08/2025 22:28

No!! They've got a job to do.

Ellmau · 12/08/2025 22:33

I was always told if you sign for something add "Not checked"
