B&B - small claims

Hi,
A few months ago I booked a last minute 1 night stay in a B&B to break up a journey. My husband and I arrived quite late, there was a sign on the door saying to ring the below number if arriving after 8pm, which I did. No answer. We knocked on the door, rang the bell and rang the number numerous times, no joy. Eventually we had to leave it and find another place.
I contacted the B&B through the website we booked via afterwards to request a refund as we’d not been able to gain entry, and there was a lot of back to forth, non commital from their side, they’d look into it, a manager would get back to me, etc etc. Nothing. They just stopped replying.
I’ve seen since the reviews are terrible but hadn’t looked beforehand.
I filed a small courts claim in an attempt to get a refund back (cost £35) and it got to the point where they had judgement filed against them, but the letter informing them bounced back and couldn’t be delivered. I rang the court to query this and was told they don’t know why but it couldn’t be delivered. They said I can go there and hand it to someone in person, but is this completely pointless?
I’m what to do now, if anything. I don’t live a massive distance from the B&B so could go there, but I doubt anyone would answer again? I did a bit of looking up and the B&B seems to be part of a chain of air b&b type properties, I’m not sure if I send the letter to their primary address instead?
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I’d just drop it for thirty five quid.

For £35 I’d take it as a lesson learned and not give anymore headspace personally

Rosecoffeecup · 02/08/2025 18:50

I think OP means it cost £35 for the claim? As that is the fee for small claims up to £300

Is it too late to just do a chargeback claim? Have you tried speaking to your bank?

car1sberg · 02/08/2025 19:12

I haven’t actually tried my bank, could try that but it was a few months ago now so maybe too late.
Yes filing the claim cost £35, the room was £120.
I may just leave it, I know it’s not worth my time but it’s very annoying!

Did they know you were arriving late? Most places have check in times and you should notify and make arrangements if not arriving with the time.

car1sberg · 02/08/2025 20:15

It had a mobile number to call up to 10pm and we arrived at 9.15pm. They never called us back at all.

I would call your bank tomorrow or Monday and see if they can help. For future reference do this in the event of a dispute before filing a court claim, you usually resolve the issue very efficiently that way.
