'New' role, reduced salary, no job evaluation

I'll try and keep it brief. I am currently employed by an organisation, on £41k. A few months ago they announced they needed to make millions in staff savings, leading to a consultation process.

During the consultation process, it was proposed that our team of 4 were cut down to 1. Our jobs would no longer exist, but there would be one new role created on £35k (with exactly the same job title). In the end, I was the only person to go for this new role and had to interview etc.

I have compared job descriptions and they are identical bar a few very specific admin tasks such as monitoring spreadsheets, definitely not a 6k reduction in work that I could see.

When I queried the drop in salary, I was emailed by HR stating "the salary reflects a reduction in the remit and role". I have had my final consultation meeting and mentioned how I couldn't see this supposed reduction, reflecting in the drop. They said that HR shouldn't have used the term reduction, and that was incorrect - it will be a different role, and the job description is flexible and things will likely be added/taken away, so I can't compare them.

I have asked to see the salary/job evaluations for both the role I do now, and the new one to see how the new salary came about, and they are saying it's too complicated to show the workings.

Where do I stand now? I have basically been told I can either take it or leave it. I have to work, I need the job and I will take it but I feel like I'm about to do the work of 4 people, on less money and it doesn't feel fair (or even potentially legal).

Any advice would be welcomed - consultation closes Friday.

I think ACAS is a solid place to start. I didn’t think a company could make redundancies and offer the same role (description or title) however I am very unsure hence suggesting ACAS

Check with acas for sure.

Seeing as they are making so many job cuts, if it was me, i would just take this lower pay role.

Then look for a new job in your own time

Thanks all - currently on the phone to ACAS

What is the offer to leave in cash terms how long would it take you to get a new job at your current salary.
Do you have savings

Eg 41 - 35 = 6k pa

Y1 ?? Redundency of X - loss of salary + new job salary
Y2 41 new job salary

If you stay in the job do not take on the work of 3 other people. Dont be a hero if its a new role with less senior responsibility then keep working to the level the role is designed for.

Here is the thing
The company is lookong to save "millions" per year
Y1 123k less redundancy X *3
Y2 123k saved

If you are looking under the hood they should pay you a little extra to PFO because the email (which you should print and store off site) could create legal issues which cost money and time to solve.

Bluntly make no mistake the business will get rid of the roles because of the massive savings protects the senior managers jobs.

Thanks everyone. I spoke with ACAS, they pretty much said my hands are tied and all I can do is make a formal complaint. Honestly, I'm so drained from the process that I don't have it left in me, I am still going to push to see the salary/job evaluations though as legally they have to have done them (though they don't have to show me, I've been told it's very bad practice not to).

Appreciate that, @AnSolas. That's really helpful.

Think I'm going to just use this as an interim until I find something else, and not pick up any additional responsibility.

Just a FYI under a "redeploy policy" you can apply for any of the new roles which are created so look across (and up) the reorganisation and see where your skills may fit
