Will Writing & Power of Attorney

I've been quoted a price of £1500 (including VAT) for a local solicitor to draw up my Will and two Lasting Powers of Attorney (financial and health/welfare). This also includes the court fees to register both POA. My Will will be very simple with one beneficiary (house and savings left to adult child). Does this seem expensive?

Well, the LPAs you can do yourself for £82 per one. Just take care with dates and timing of signatures.

I was going to use a local solicitor so they can witness it. I haven't got anyone else to ask

Sounds about right to me.

Or do it yourself and potentially get it wrong causing your children issues and expense down the line.

Not expensive but you could do both yourself if you can ask someone to witness signatures and someone to say you understand what the poa means. Or if you want a solicitor to do it, some charities offer free will writing at certain times. .

Get a few prices so you can compare. I was talking to someone about wills recently. It’s surprising how much the price varies.

TheaBrandt1 · 23/07/2025 12:07

That’s because circumstances vary. A single person leaving a modest estate to your only child is one thing.

Having a larger estate /blended family/ overseas property / a business / vulnerable beneficiaries / beneficiaries on benefits/ wanting to undertake care home planning / wanting protection in event spouse remarries is quite another so those wills are more expensive. A “free” will won’t deal with any of those issues.
