Restricted Covenant when buying new home

I am on the way to buying a home and our solicitor has uncovered the house has a covenant stating "Not to carry on or permit to be carried on at the property any trade or business whatsoever". This was put in place by the council when they sold the property in 1993 to a housing association. I am looking at starting a small business which involves craft. No customers to the house etc and is purely postal / personal delivery. The only thing that will happen is the physical manufacture of the product. Has anyone found great difficulty / expense in trying to get this ruling lifted? And what is the likelihood this would be enforced?

Nobody will even know. It's when cars are coming and going with customers. Or there is noise from machinery. I don't think you need permission for the type of thing you plan to do.

Not all covenants are unenforceable or in place for unlimited time. We were not allowed chickens but it ran out after 30 years.

You cant have your business registered at your home address. This is easy to get around. Just because aware of it.

This type of restriction is a lot more common than you think. It was on my last property which was a new build and my current one which is mid century.

It's partly to avoid deliveries and disturbance in a residential neighborhood.

I am aware that on my last estate there were efforts to crack down on it, after some people took the piss.

As others posters have said,its to stop nuisance to neighbours in what was built as a residential street. We had a neighbour who had big lorries delivering supplies, complaints were made to the council and the person concerned had to find a business premises. Another person who was renting and tried to set up business from the address was evicted by the landlord for breaching the terms of the tenancy.
