Partner deceased and solicitor chasing me for debts

My partner died suddenly in August 2024.The previous May , his father died and he took on the role of paying and dealing with the funeral directors .

I have received a letter (addressed to my partner) from a solicitor acting on behalf of the funeral directors informing me of an outstanding debt owing .

My partner had no will , no property because the property was in my name, and no assets. However, I received a death in service payment from his employees . The trustees found in my favour. Does this count as an asset?

I do not want my partner’s family involved in this , they have been through enough already.

Any advice would be appreciated.

No, but his debts need to be cleared if he has funds - I would have thought his insurance would be for that sort of thing.

@cloudyblueglassYou’re right. The debt is not hers and she does not have to pay it herself. It was her partner’s and therefore should have been paid out of his estate. This was the responsibility of whoever administered the estate. I assume that was the OP because she says she dealt with the bank, and that she hasn’t wanted her partner’s family to have to deal with it.

Her partner clearly did not have much by way of assets but anything that was solely his should have been sold to pay the debt.

As he didn’t leave a will, anything that was left after his debts were paid should have gone to his son, (unless the OP was his civil partner, in which case it should have gone to her).
