So over 10 years ago, i was in a bad relationship and renting from a family member. The house fell into disrepair - basically the boiler didnt work properly. Family member refused to fix it, we had an engineer out who said it wasnt installed correctly so wouldnt touch it. We then refused to pay the rent and the family member took us to court for eviction. They also tried to claim hardship which was ruled out as the judge acknowledged there was hardship on both sides. An attachment of earnings was made against my name which luckily my employer helped me so was a low monthly amout. I knew it would take 20 years to pay off (£20 a month) and obviously we were evicted. My ex partner wasnt linked to it, im asuming because he didnt work.
Fast forward 10 years, ive left the partner, he actualy passed away 3 years ago. Im married to someone else with 2 children amd turned my life around.
Im not bothered by the £20 and actually think its quite funny. It doesnt affect my credit score and i refuse to pay it off quicker. The reason for this is because i dont agree with the amount owed, unfortunately some payments were made in cash which i couldnt evidence which i accept is my fault. No proper tenency agreement or rent records... lots of lessons learnt.
Ive since made up with one of the family members and im civil with the other. They said today that they looked into cancelling it, but it would cost them over £700. Is this true?
