Bills ? Dad? Bank?

My dad keeps spending his money for his bills
i hVe power of attorney over his finances
shall I just set up a separate bank account in his name? And transfer money out his main account into his bill account? So he can spend what he likes out his normal account?? And I can relax knowing his bills will be paid each month?
im new to all this. Thank you

Does he have capacity? If so is the POA activated?
That makes a huge difference to what you should be doing

Does he have enough money to pay all his bills and still have money left over for himself.
Speak to your Dad’s bank and register the power of attorney with them ( assuming he is now needing your involvement) as most banks have special set ups which allow for carers to be involved.

He’s got limited capacity. He was removed from his home as he was abused. So I have got him a house sorted next to mine . The police and social services removed him. He was living with me for 3 months .

If you think the POA needs to be activated speak to his bank
You should be paying the bills if you have an active POA as you are responsible for them and anything else financial.
Look into what the legal responsibilities of holding a POA are and make sure you fulfil them

It’s just hard as my dad’s got limited capacity.so they have said he can still make some decisions and have a bank card etc
plus he hates me doing stuff for him :(

In which case you could set him up with an account with a small amount in for his every day needs and pay the bills yourself from the main account.
Be aware though that you have legal responsibilites as a POA holder and also that its not usual for the person you hold it for to not like it and if he is deemed to have even some capacity he can make his own decisions

How si he accessing his money? Can you set his bills to go by dd as soon as his pension arrives? What does he buy, could he still being influenced by an abuser?

Lightuptheroom · 19/04/2025 11:15

The question would be whether he has capacity. If he doesn't then yes you can set up a separate account and split the bills off. If the power of attorney hasn't been activated as he still has capacity, then he'll have to set up the separate account (I assume he's doing online shopping on such like?)

Harassedevictee · 20/04/2025 14:08

Definitely set up a bills account with a Standing Order from his main account. I would also suggest a separate email so you can keep his bills accounts completely separate from yours.

What we did, also the victim of elderly abuse who was removed.

register the power of attorney.
make sure all bills were paid by dd.

then we helped them apply for a chase card, and transferred all disposable income on to it every month (so income minus bills and a small amount kept back for emergencies)

then they could manage their own spending, but once the money was gone they couldn’t get into debt, and bills were all paid.
