Speeding Fine

I’ve been caught driving 70 in a 50. Clean licence but same happened 6 years ago. Will it just be £100 fine and 3 points again as it’s concerning about these percentage of earnings as there is no way I can afford that as it’s be at least £750. After paying bills, childcare I have about £500 but then I have to pay food, fuel, kids expenses.

You will probably just get a speed awareness course which will be about £100

RedHelenB · 05/04/2025 19:56

You'll get 3 points on your licence for that and a £100 fine.

Givemebackmygirlhood · 05/04/2025 20:08

20 miles over the speed limit is pretty serious. You could get a speed awareness course or £100 fine and 3 points but I think you would be lucky. More likely 4-6 points and a fine based on your income. https://www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/offences/magistrates-court/item/speeding-revised-2017/

If your fine is more than £100 (as it absolutely should be in my view) and you can’t afford to pay it in one go you will have the opportunity to pay in instalments.

Not fir 20mph over the limit!

helpfulperson · 05/04/2025 20:36

I got a ticket for 15 over so 45 in a 30. (I thought it was a 40) A friend in the police said I was lucky to just get the 3 points and fine.

WallaceinAnderland · 05/04/2025 20:39

70 in a 50? Jesus, what's wrong with you?

Shade17 · 05/04/2025 20:44

It’s well within the threshold for a fixed penalty, but a little fast for the course. It’ll just be 3 points/£100 fine.

Could be on a dual carriageway/motorway where there's a temporary 50 and didn't see it soon enough

BakedBeansforabrain · 05/04/2025 20:55

I would expect 75-125% of relevant weekly income

That.

Exactly.

Gonk123 · 05/04/2025 20:58

Why speed so far over the limit and then worry about being caught? Worry more about the nasty accident you could cause speeding like that perhaps?!

Then you’d be very wrong.

jodesxx · 05/04/2025 21:13

For context, this is a dual carriageway and to put it this way, a lot of money has been made on the day they put a mobile speed camera out and about at 9am! There is no history of accidents on that road and one of those roads that it is plain stupid to have a 50mph speed limit. I know I should have been doing 50, as should have everyone else on that stretch and will accept the fine. I was late for work and was being stupid. Lesson learned but I am just worried about the fine based on my circumstances. It sound as though I may be lucky and just get 3 points and £100. Thank you to everyone who has given nice helpful responses!

The penalty for doing 70 in a 50 is a Band B fine and either 7-28 day disqualification or 4-6 points.
Band B fine is typically 100% of weekly income (after tax etc). On top of that is a 40% surcharge, and costs (perhaps £100). You can ask for a payment plan if you cannot pay it all at once, eg £50 per month.
Please ignore those who think any and every speeding offence attracts a £100 fine and 3 points, it isn't true.

This is only true if you go to court. The OP is well within the threshold for a fixed penalty and that’s what will be offered.

Redburnett · 05/04/2025 21:37

A fixed penalty is unlikely, if you apply the 10% + 2 guideline.

The 10% + 2 guideline is where enforcement STARTS and even then that’s generally a course. In a 50 limit a course could be offered between 57 and 64, then a fixed penalty from there up to 75.

Spend 30 minutes on the M25 and you'll realise how easily it happens. Damn thing changes more often than the weather. 70. 50. 70. 40. Back to 70.

MrsGaryKemp · 05/04/2025 22:08

My DH got caught for 70 in a 50, it was a variable speed limit on the motorway which caught him out. He got 3 points and £100 fine.

TranceNation · 05/04/2025 22:10

It's not the same offence after a few years that's the issue I think, it's the excessive speed against the speed limit. You were way over the limit. I'd be fearing six points if I'm honest.

A lot of money made due to a lot of people who are so entitled the limits don’t apply to them.

As previously stated, well within the threshold for a fixed penalty. 76 mph + is where you need to start getting worried.
