Wrongful search and accusation of shoplifting at Aldi

I am tremendously upset. I needed the restroom and was dashing out of Aldi. Next thing, I saw the security attempt to dash across but then he stopped in front of me. I was puzzled, in shock and wondering what? He put his hand in my shopping bag and brought out my stuff one at a time until he got my receipt out.

Honestly, I was still in shock when a deputy manager came around, grabbed my pack of Revels, with a look of disgust, yelled: This! This! You took this from the store!

I asked if he was stupid or something? Then the security staff nudged him to show him a receipt and immediately, he denied accusing me of theft and began to claim he only said that the store sells it.

By then, shock was over! I was immensely embarrassed and I demanded for an apology. Deputy Manager refused to apologise claiming he has a right to search. And Aldi sells the item.

His colleague stepped in, apologised and told him it won't cost him anything to apologise. Dude kept insisting that he has a right to search.

I am mortified! I feel so violated! There was no evidence for the defamation of my character. I wasn't even in the chocolate section at all!

This is all shades of wrong.....

What to do please?

I'm not surprised you're upset. Have you got someone in RL with you?

I'm not entirely sure what rights they have to search actually but am sure someone else will be along who does.

Have a nice cup of tea.

Then carry on with your day.

Beautifulbouquet · 04/03/2025 21:21

I'm sure it was upsetting but I'm not sure what you mean about what to do next.

It's fairly unusual to go in an Aldi not buy anything then run towards the door. So I'd avoid doing that in future and also make sure you keep receipts for things you buy (as you did).

This sounds like a short story by a year 6.

Msmoonpie · 04/03/2025 21:25

They do not have a right to search you. They can look in your bag IF you give permission.

I would be writing a complaint to their head office. I would be expecting retraining at the very least.

A friend has something similar happen to her in a different shop. After her complaint they were suddenly very apologetic indeed,

If my Year 6s wrote this story I’d tell them to have another go 😂

The search by the deputy manager was illegal. They need your consent to search your bags. However, if you refuse to consent, they can detain you and call the police. The police do not need your consent to search your bags.

From a legal perspective there isn't much you can do about it. You can, of course, complain to Aldi's head office about how you were treated, but that won't necessarily achieve anything.

Soontobe60 · 04/03/2025 21:26

How did you know he was the deputy manager?

How did you know he was the deputy manager?

It was probably on his badge or he was referred to as such. I think the OP may not be in the UK therefore the advice on searching her bag may not be correct.

Afrokimmy · 05/03/2025 09:12

What's RL?
I looked online and they've no right to search without my consent.

RL = real life

ItShouldntHappenToMeYet · 05/03/2025 12:26

Violated?
No-one who has actually been violated would use that as a throw-away phrase.
Yes, it was a dreadful experience, so report the deputy manager

Velmy · 05/03/2025 13:56

What happened when you told him to stop putting his hand in your shopping bag after he took out the first item, as you had not consented to being searched?

Afrokimmy · 05/03/2025 14:06

I didn't run towards the door.

When I realised I was suspected shoplifting. I demanded he apologised. I demanded a few times but he was unremorseful and intentionally tried to twist the story immediately.

He had a badge

Feeling violated in this context stems from a sense of intrusion and loss of control over my personal space, my personal belongings.

Strangers with unclean, gloved hands searched through my bag, touching each item, handling and invading my things without my consent.

Afrokimmy · 05/03/2025 14:18

I was puzzled throughout the experience and only came to when Mr Deputy Manager announced I had stolen a pack of Revels
