Car accident wasn't my fault

Somebody crashed into me yesterday, after they pulled out of a junction admitted liability at the scene. Now that I have contacted my insurance, the person and their insurance company haven't admitted liability yet. Is this normal?

Yes, quite normal. One of the things that’s drummed into people is to never admit liability. Don’t worry - let the insurers do their job.

Do you have any dash cam footage or any witnesses?

bumblebubble23 · 28/02/2025 17:21

No, nobody else stopped there was 3 vehicles involved in the collision and the person at fault admitted liability at the scene. But I've since had two missed calls and one voicemail from the boys mother (who crashed into me) she wasn't with him in the car. And a missed call and a text message from the boy. Asking me to ring her for a chat? Am I being over the top thinking this is strange? we all exchanged details at the scene.

They probably want to sort it without going through the insurance, ignore the calls and let the insurance companies do what they need to do.

mrstea301 · 28/02/2025 17:37

Let your insurance deal with it.

You should never admit liability at the scene and it isn't binding, in case one party is intimidated into it or something!

Ilikewinter · 28/02/2025 17:51

She's either going to ask you not to go through insurance, or give you grief! Either way I wouldn't call her back. You said 3 cars are involved, was it a hit from behind?. If so the middle car claims from the back, the front claims from the middle and they claim again from the back - if that makes sense

MrsPeterHarris · 28/02/2025 19:44

Sorry Op, but in my experience he'll now deny it - let the insurance companies deal with it.

Shroedy · 02/03/2025 20:01

It's very normal that the insurance company won't formally admit liability quickly - they won't assume that their insured necessarily knows where liability stands (lots of people really don't know), that's not to say they're wrong in your case but that the insurance company will need to speak to their insured properly first and might not have done so. It doesn't necessarily mean they'll deny liability. Just wait and let your insurance company sort it out. And I agree not to speak to the boy or his mother. If they keep trying to contact you then you could always just send a neutral message saying you've passed it to your insurance and will be leaving it to them from now and then ignore anything further.

Nail on the head. You've exchanged details and you've notified your insurer. That's it really. There's nothing that the other driver (nor their mother) can add now. You don't need to (and shouldn't) engage further with them.

They'll probably either want to get your to settle outside the insurance to stop the lad's premiums go sky high, or they want to settle because he wasn't actually insured.

Let the insurers do their job and leave them to it.

If he's not insured then Police asap

Might be worth reporting it anyway in case he isnt insured
