Civil recovery...not my mistake!

Hi, just looking for some advice.
I have been informed by a retailer that they have referred me to civil recovery.
I purchased some items online and returned one item I didn't like out of the three.
The company refunded me a full order refund by mistake.
I did the right thing and didn't want to keep the money so I contacted them telling them they overpaid me in error.
They wanted the money back by bacs and wamted proof of payment etc.
I had an enquiry about this and wanted them to respond to me before I paid.
They corresponded with me each time by email every few days so it was taking ages to converse.
I had full intention of paying or I wouldn't have told them in the first place that I was overpaid the refund.
Now I'm annoyed because while waiting for a email back from them they have now emailed me to tell me we can't deal with yout enquiry because you have been referred to civil recovery.
So my question is who do I pay now...the company the amount outstanding or should I wait for a letter or something now from civil recovery?
What's the procedure now?
I'm going on holiday so dont want to recieve any letters and I'm not here to sort it out and it could escalate so just want to pay it.
Will I get any extra fines from it being recovered now? I feel this is so unfair.

Civil recovery is done through the courts for something obtained unlawfully. It shouldn’t apply in the situation you describe (and I would expect the court to reject it).

So would I have to go to court to sort this out? Even if I make payment?

Not necessarily to court, although the court administers it. Civil rather than criminal.

Id be making it VERY clear to the company that this is unacceptable.
