Would a DIY will be enough?

I recently asked on here what people thought of a Family Probate Trust - the replies were enough to make me contact the Will Writing Company within the 14 days cooling off period to change my mind and they said they will refund the money I paid. So my next question is do we actually need a will? If we do would a DIY one be enough? I am 62, married to husband of same age. We have 4 adult children and 4 grandchildren. Own home currently worth £500,000 mortgage paid, have a car and motorbike, few expensive guitars but nothing else worth anything. No exes, no other kids, nobody else we would want to have a share. Would a DIY will be enough if we want kids to share the funds from what we leave with a small percentage to each grandchild.

Pay a solicitor a couple of hundred quid.

Professionally done wills don't usually cost much. And they're safer. The problem with DIY wills is you don't usually find out if there's an issue them til it's too late.

A DIY Will is unlikely to be legally binding. Even the Will packs from WH Smith are shit. Why wouldn’t you just pay a (qualified, insured and regulated) solicitor to draft mirror Wills for you? You can clearly afford it.

No.

I’m a solicitor who did 6 months of my training in Wills and Probate. We still paid someone who specialises in it to draw up our straightforward wills.

@BumpandBounce It is just like anything really, no point in paying for something if it isn't needed but I will now get a solicitor to do a will

Good decision.

I highly recommend Marlow Wills! Ran by a lovely MNer, MumbleChum.

No VAT & can be done on line/over the phone and expert advice.

Elvisse · 16/02/2025 10:18

Does Marlow Wills only apply in England and wales?

RandomMess · 16/02/2025 11:49

@Elvisse I don't know if she covers other jurisdictions she may have recommendations if she doesn't.

We had our wills done by Marlow Wills then a few years later our Lasting Power of Attorneys. They are so good and efficient explain everything would recommend them. every time. Would never use a Will Writing Service our friend's neighbour used to be a will writer and use to get our friend to type out the wills for him on his computer as said they look more professional use to pay him. Thought very unprofessional.
