Does this sound like I'm being "managed out" of my job?

Hi, I'll try and be brief.

New manager.

Requested an occupational health appointment due to an absence I had with my disability. They made one recommended adjustment. My manager went against this and placed heavy restricts which prevented me from carrying out many parts of my job, despite my disability never causing issue to compete my job previously.

Told to compete some training (of a physical nature), was told my manager that once this was done she would lift my restrictions. Passed with flying colours. Manager then said she needed to seek OH advice again and continued to restrict me from doing my job.

OH appt took at least 2 months from this point. When I finally had the appointment the OH practitioner recommended ZERO restrictions and that I could fully do my job.

Almost immediately after this, my manager tells me I am being put on a performance improvement plan. Reasons given are because of all the time I had on restricted duty, which I never wanted or was never recommended in the first place.

I've asked if there are actually any performance issues (I never had any previously to this, or any issues with absence etc). I've been told no, I think because she'd have nothing to back this up with. All I've ever been told by management over my employment in this industry is that my work is of a very high standard. Although I've been restricted from carrying out a lot of parts of my role I've always been told again that my work is very good, I've never made a mistake.

This new manager I feel has constantly undermined me, makes me feel incapable and makes out like I cannot do even the most simple tasks.

She's also isolated me from the rest of my team.

I really feel like I'm being managed out and each barrier she's put in place I've overcome, but then more are put in my way.

It does sound like she’s taken against you. She may be trying to manage you out but it doesn’t sound like she’ll succeed as you can do your job well and her reasons are bullshit.

is there an option to move team or manager?

Do you have an HR team you can talk to?

Because I think could consider making a formal complaint / grievance about this manager. going against OH and placing unnecessary restrictions on you due to her misconceptions about your disability sounds very much like disability discrimination. A good HR team would be really wary here because if she does try to manage you out you’d have a good case against them. If you could move team or manager then they might be very keen to facilitate that .

I've spoken to my union and they have taken legal advice and apparently I have a strong case for disability discrimination, however I really just want to be able to do my job. I don't want to go to an employment tribunal or anything I just want to do the job I (used) to love.

I would request an informal meeting with manager above her to raise concern and outline legal advice given but reiterate you just want to be allowed to do your job as you were before, if you don’t feel they will be supportive request a formal meeting with line manager and union rep present - potential grievance depending on how meeting goes.
