Just found out that fines for speeding offences have potentially gone through the roof. Upto 150% of your weekly earnings, capped at £1000 for a level 1 fine and £2500 for a level 3 fine.
I am absolutely sick of this country, it's just indirect taxation. Hammering hard working folk constantly.

Or you could just not speed?

Chemenger · 30/01/2025 17:28

I’ve never had a speeding ticket in the more than three decades I’ve been driving, so this doesn’t worry me.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 30/01/2025 17:29

I don't think I have had a speeding ticket for over 20 years, so I won't lose sleep over this. Surely it's an easy 'indirect tax' to avoid? Call it a stupidity tax if you will.

mitogoshigg · 30/01/2025 17:35

Simple, don't speed. Anyway when I was caught I did a speed awareness course instead of a fine

Do you think it's right that two people should get punished differently for the same offence?

I've only had one ticket, about 15 years ago - 34 in a 30 zone, going down a hill. That could now cost me a grand (if I earned enough).

But would more likely be a speed awareness course unless you are a repeat offender and then will be punished more heavily.
You say people will be punished more heavily for the same offence but its relative, £200 fine to one person might well be their whole weeks budget, £200 to the high earner is a couple of glasses of champagne so in theory may well be fairer and definitely more of a deterrent to all.

Timefordrama · 30/01/2025 17:50

It's for 'serious, excessive' speeding. It's still £100 for most speeding offences.

Collaborate · 30/01/2025 17:54

Speeding fines have been linked to income since 2005. Noce of you to catch up after 20 years.

If you're sick of this country you could always leave. Although don't try Europe. We pissed them off by being rude to them.

And shut the door on your way out.

TickingAlongNicely · 30/01/2025 17:58

Try Finland. A multimillionaire got fined over £100,000 for being over the limit with a similar rule.

chargeitup · 30/01/2025 18:27

Yes I do think it's fair and we would be paying the top level.

There would be no incentive for wealthy people if it was all set at the lower rate. Or it would be crippling and risking poor people going in to debt if it was set at the higher rate. It's supposed to sting in an equitable way

Redglitter · 30/01/2025 18:29

Well it's an easy enough taxation to avoid. Don't speed. Simple

I'd set the upper levels far higher too. You're see celebs and footballers etc getting fined, £1000 is a drop in the ocean to them

pineapplebobbing · 30/01/2025 18:34

It’s almost as if they want this to be a deterrent or something…

GutsyShark · 30/01/2025 18:35

Yeah I suspect this thread will be overwhelmingly full of holier than thou up on their high horse types claiming they would never dream of speeding.

Having said that modern cars have cruise control, speed limit detection, there are mobile apps you can use (through CarPlay or Android Auto) so speeding really is a conscious decision now.

Also someone mentioned speed awareness courses - I don’t think they’re a thing in Scotland?

Barrenfieldoffucks · 30/01/2025 19:47

I got pulled in France once about 25 years ago, and the fine was dependent on a number of factors...payable in cash there and then. Now that was tricky to manage.

No, it could not. For that you would be offered a fixed penalty of £100 plus 3 points or a speed awareness course. The fines linked to income only happen if the case goes to court because you plead not guilty, or you are speeding excessively, or you are a repeat offender.

Pickandmixusername · 30/01/2025 21:03

Sounds fair to me 🤷‍♀️. I won't join in saying i would never speed etc etc, but as a pp says, if the fine is low, high earners won't care about getting tickets. If it's too high for low earners, they won't be able to pay. It being linked to earnings sounds sensible. It is not for 'normal' speeding anyway, but for serious speeding.

Me too. 100 euros in cash. Was very lenient considering the speed.

100PercentFaithful · 30/01/2025 22:36

I personally think it’s entirely appropriate that speeders contribute more towards our emergency services.
Speeding causes many deaths and injuries and many lives are ruined as a result.

I also hate it when people warn others about speed cameras.
If a speeder is caught on camera they may be taken off the road, made to attend a driving awareness course or at the least fined which might make them think twice about speeding next time. Much more effective than briefly slowing down because you know a camera is there.

People would never try and justify drink driving - I don’t understand why they try and justify speeding.

SereneCapybara · 30/01/2025 22:42

Don't speed. Then you can't be "taxed." Or maybe speeders who cause accidents should be sent the hospital bill for all involved. That could be a fair tax on speeding.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 30/01/2025 22:44

Realistically, a £100 fine is far less significant, so far less of a deterrent to a higher earner. If you think about it that way, it seems sensible to scale up penalties to try to ensure that they remain a deterrent.

JohnofWessex · 30/01/2025 22:49

If you don't like the idea of an earnings related speeding fine why not just remove all penalties for everything throw the prison gates open?

As the saying goes, if you cant do the time dont do the crime.

Or do you believe that Motorists are superior persons who should be allowed to behave as they think fit?

Personally I think that there are a lot of drivers who should be in the Nonces wing at Strangeways given the risk they pose to others in particular children

Edited

I believe the police claim they would rather people slow don’t than fine them, so warning others of a camera would seem a better idea than letting them continue speeding?

The comparison with drink driving is ridiculous.

Huwipulotu · 30/01/2025 22:59

I was done for speeding on an a-road (3points + £100) and I deserved it. Has made me a lot more cautious and aware of limit.

its absolutely appropriate to clamp down on speeding especially in residential areas. Nothing pleases me more by being tailgated by dimwit in a 20mph zone because I refuse to drive faster.
