changing child's surname

Hi all.
I separated from my child's father when she was 4 weeks old. His true colours came through and that was that. He takes hardly anything to do with her now. Unfortunately, I had her registered with his surname as well as mine.
He has not seen her in almost a year. She is 17 months old now. I need some advice in how to go about changing her surname. Is it possible to do it without involving him? I don't want her to carry a surname she has no connection with for the rest of her life.

Thank you :)

If he's on the birth certificate then he has parental responsibility and you need his permission to change her surname

prh47bridge · 27/01/2025 19:10

@dementedpixie is right. The only way you can change her name without his consent is to get a court order, but that is unlikely in this situation. She will, of course, be able to change her own name when she is 16. She won't need anyone's consent to do so.

What do you mean - you can’t change her name without consent from him legally. You could add yours. Does he pay csa and have any contact?

you can tell the school
legally Daisy Norman-Jones (let’s say if this is her name) but then say
known as ‘Daisy Jones’ please

@Lefthanddownnumberone our surnames are both on her birth certificate. I have had the same problem in my life as all of my legal documents had both my surnames but I was only known by one.

He has no contact and doesn't pay CSA. She doesn't and probably will never know him.
