Caution on DBS

2025winterco · 17/01/2025 22:06

My husbands just got his enhanced DBS back and it has a caution for ABH

2015 he was cautioned for an assault and haven't thought much about it since as it was a silly drunk disagreement that ended in a scuff and after the caution didn't even think much more about it

We've applied for it ourselves so not for a job but wanted you add it to his profile for future work
Anyway I've been reading some cautions are filtered after 6 years but as this has been 10 years and that some never come off ?is this the case does anyone know

I didn't think you could apply for a DBS yourself

You can't.

Actually i'll add you definitely can't for an enhanced one, possibly this is a basic one which is a bit pointless/ worthless doing.

It's definitely and enhanced and we have done but maybe because he is self employed? He paid a lot of money for it

You must have done it through a company. Who verified his identity?

2025winterco · 17/01/2025 22:17

We've had some issues with it so he applied back in the summer and when it came though a few weeks ago it was a basic one
We then had to email someone to say we've paid for an enhanced and then the enhanced arrived
I'm looking at it now
It definitely wasn't for a job so god knows who we went through?!

Yeah, that’s not a legal service…

Anyway, some offences are suitable for filtering, some aren’t. It’s an automatic system, I believe, so this would have come off if he was eligible. At least you know that it’ll show up and need explaining to potential customers/employers now - although given the time that has passed, it may not make too much of a difference if it was a one off.

for example, if it could be considered a violent assault, it can’t be filtered. If it was ABH, it’s also not eligible.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 17/01/2025 22:20

ABH is a specified/schedule 15 offence, it will always show on an enhanced DBS

GreenSkyes · 17/01/2025 22:22

You can apply through direct gov, basic one is under £20.

If he needs it in future, just be honest. It was one incident a decade ago. I wouldn't think abh caution would be removed, but I'm just guessing.

2025winterco · 17/01/2025 22:25

Ah ok that makes sense
He's 49 years and has never needed a DBS ever until last year (he's self employed) so maybe one of his contractors applied for it
He does temporary contract work so maybe it's that. I'll ask him and it's probably that
I'm just seeing if it ever goes away that was all
He has his basic one and as I say only last year something came up which we thought e would get a DBS
It took months - and after chasing it we had both forgot it was on there
Hopefully it he ever does need it for work we can explain the circumstances
I was there that eve and it was awful and he was trying to protect someone else
But anyway he's not needed one and hopefully an be explained
Thank you all

Yeah I see that now but he has a basic
Maybe one of his contractors ran it as I say he mainly works on temp contracts
I'll have to check with him I'm sure he said he did it himself
Thanks all

But someone has to verify your identity, you can't do that yourself.

As I say someone must have done it then
I just thought he had but obviously not

You can apply yourself through a recognised body. My son did it last year. A bit of a faff but easy enough. Not enhanced though.
