Can I ask to be excused from jury service on the day??

Already deferred once.

Due to start in the new year.

Want to be excused owing to caring responsibilities and lack of childcare, my first reason for deferring was I had literally just started a new job.

Is it possible I can ask on the first day if I can be excused? I'm a single parent and have no outside help.

My brother deferred and the time he went he was in the middle of bar exams and was excused indefinitely, never got called back.

Is it possible I can ask on the day??

How many people on here would REALLY send their kid home with a random local teenager for two weeks?

How many on here would REALLY happily pick up the kid of a random school mum for a fortnight for £2.50 an hour?

Honestly, some people are full of shit.

Not a random school kid. But a friend of my child, sure. It is not like being a childminder with loads of paperwork and OFSTED stuff to meet. It is literally pick up your friends child at the same time as you pick up your own, and look after them until you get back. They can play video games, watch TV, etc. Its hardly hard.

Yes I agree. I have local childcare so no skin in the game myself, but I also know that under the age of about 5 my children wouldn't have happily gone along with strangers the way some do (and no, they wouldn't be fine after a few minutes - nursery admitted defeat with one of ours during settling in and later said he was one of only a handful of children they'd had that they couldn't settle).

Are you able to claim expenses for informal childcare? I genuinely don't know. I'd assumed it would have to be a registered provider.

The £2.50 an hour is for informal childcare, not a registered provider. It is for family or friends. So a grandparent or other relative or a friend of your child's. And it does not have to meet and Ofsted standards. It could literally be spending a few hours afterschool with a friend playing video games for 2 weeks.
It is not for a random teenager or someone you do not personally know.

Honestly it was only when my dd was in year 5 & 6 that she made a good friend whose mum l could ask to help with pickups - can't assume other parents will help out.
I do feel for you op but not sure what the solution is

Not "a random" anyone..

Because we don't have family support, we have made an effort to find people we are comfortable with looking after our children.

For something like this, our options would be:

School after school care - which accepts one off bookings and our children are well used to

Parents of friends of our children - who have had them before for playdates and our children are comfortable there

Teenage neighbours - again, our children know them and are comfortable with them and their parents

Our babysitter who is well qualified and the children are again comfortable with

Of course on Mumsnet everyone is a single parent, lives very rurally, has to drive for hours to get everywhere, is NC with all family, have no friends, neither do their children, so their only childcare option is a "random" but I think this is a minority position in real life

Fine for older children but not KS1 or younger because you won't be fully concentrating on work.

And? Unless you’re my boss then me fully concentrating at work doesn’t actually matter.

My employer knows and is happy with it and my work.

Imagine the courts which can barely deliver justice suddenly providing 12 hours of childcare

A randomers child no. A friend of my child or to help out another mum/dad I was friends with, absolutely.

Why haven't you rang them already? You've left it until the last minute.
