Hazardous Outdoor Stairs

Hi all,

I’m sorry that this will be long.

I live in an apartment complex, which has the ground floor, first/middle floor and the second floor at the top. You enter through the entry gate which takes you through to the courtyard at the back and you’ll see three sets of stairs up to the front doors. The stairs and walkways are all made of decking material. There is no lift.

I live on the top floor with my partner and baby, so it’s already a pain to get downstairs because we have to take the baby down in the carrycot.

This morning, we opened our door to lots of patches of ice on the walkway and this continued here and there down the stairs. Given that there are many family lets in the complex, I wanted to ask the estate agents (who are also the landlords for the entire building) if they’re responsible for gritting the property - this is our first winter here so wasn’t aware either way. Even those living here without kids would struggle to get down. It’s incredibly dangerous.

I got a reply back saying they’re not responsible, but we can use the nearby grit and do it ourselves. Fair enough… however! They’ve said we can grit the ground floor pavement and none of the walkways or stairs due to the steel bolts. They advised we simply walk with caution.

Is there anything at all I can do in this situation? The communal areas are hazardous. I’d really appreciate any help with this please, and attached a photo as an example :)
