Job title change

A couple of years ago I signed a letter from work because I had moved to a "senior" job title.

Now my department is changing and I've had a new letter with the new job title without the "senior" added to it. The company say the original letter that I signed years ago was a mistake.

What would happen if I didn't sign this new letter to accept the new job title? There is no salary increase linked to it.

What's the difference? Has there been some kind of job regrading or restructuring going on? Have the fundamentals of your job changed in any way? Why are they asking you to sign another letter - is it a new contract?

Assuming you previously signed correspondence as "senior planner" or "senior sales manager" or whatever - will you now be "planner" "sales manager" type thing and the suggestion of being downgraded is bothering you?

Lots of work titles are just guff and puffery to make people sound/feel important. If your job hasn't materially changed and there is no loss of earnings I wouldn't care.

Some mistake. They've stuffed themselves up there, haven't they? I'd keep on pushing and say that you have been known as a 'Senior ......' for years and this is the first time you've been told they made a mistake. Tell them it is going to look really bad if they make you stop using the title on correspondence now.

Is there a risk that they are planning to “review “ salaries/gradings? In which case they might claim that you have accepted a lower/less responsible position, and thus be entitled to a lower salary…

@thatsawhopperthatlemon That's an interesting point thanks. I'll like your suggestion of how the mistake will look in correspondence.

@RamblinRosie I suspect you are right that this is a first step to put us all in the same barrel for reviews etc.

Does anyone know - if it is just a letter and not a contract can I ignore it? I'm struggling to think what would happen if I didn't sign it.
