Whistleblowers legal protection

Can someone help me with how whistleblower legislation applies please?

Can you only report against your own employer? Or would you be covered under the legislation if you report about another organisation?

Broadly to summarise:

You work for company A

In the course of your job you discover company B is doing something wrong

You use company A's whistleblower procedure to report it to company A (your employer)

So with whistleblower protection, it stops you from being dismissed or discriminated against on the basis of your disclosure (by your own employer).
Are you talking about a situation where your company outsources work to company B (eg cleaning) and you tell your employer about something company B is doing, such as their staff sexually harassing people. I’m not 100% sure but I think that probably would be covered if company B’s workers are working in your workplace and are contracted by your company. If I’m wrong hopefully someone will correct me.

But is there a risk to you if you report to your employer what company B is doing? Are company A and B connected in some way, eg part of the same group? Because why would your employer treat you less favourably if you reported something about another company? Would they even be able to act on the disclosure beyond maybe cancelling their own contract with company B? And as you don’t work for company B, they’d be unable to take any action against you.

If you want something to be done you’d have to report to a third party such as a regulator. If you’re worried you could always make an anonymous report.
Also is it something company B’s management is aware of? Would reporting straight to company B’s management be an option.

The legislation covers you no matter whether you are reporting your employer or someone else.

Thank you for the clarification.
