Speeding offence

I have just had a letter. Doing 40 in a 20mph. Was on M1 other day and suddenly there were signs for a 20mph limit but everyone was keeping around same speed. Suddenly saw lots of flashing going on in my mirror and knew I'd been flashed with everyone else. Worried sick. No points on licence. Worries I'll have to go to court or a massive fine of my weekly income. Feel so gutted as I'm usually so aware, just need to not go with the speed of the flow next time!

You can usually plead guilty by post. It does not matter what others were doing.

I know. hard lesson learnt. I've just logged in to admit it

Three points and £100 fine. Don’t know if you’d be offered a speed awareness course as you were 20mph over the speed limit on the road

A twenty limit on the M1?

Where and when?

mercutio84 · 26/10/2024 14:55

It was tuesday. It came on the variable speed limit as if something wrong but just went with the flow. Bad idea.

You get 3 points on your licence - I’ve had 3 lots over the years - I’ve declared it to my insurance co but it’s never had any noticeable impact on insurance over the years

Bromptotoo · 26/10/2024 15:16

I've never seen it lower than 40 and by that time we're usually in a 'chance would be a fine thing' territory.

I guess something like a report of a vehicle going wrong way might explain it being as low as 20.

As PP say 3 points and a fine is what you'd expect. Too far over the limit for a driver improvement course.

Out of interest, were there messages on the gantries beforehand or did it go from 40 to 20 with no warning of any type?

I don't think you'll get a speed awareness course being so over the limit. I didn't when I did 40 in a 30 (in my defence it was a dual carriageway with no pavements and an honest mistake). The points on your license are soon spent and the fine was c£100.

I do understand as being a conscientious driver was and is very important to me. I knew someone who was the most staid person you'd ever meet. He had been decorated by the Queen and was very high up in a national voluntary organisation. We were amazed when he admitted he'd been on half a dozen speed awareness courses. 'Luckily' in those days they were operated by individual constabularies/counties and he'd been caught in different parts of the country.

40 in a 20 is too fast for a 3 points/£100 fixed penalty. You’re looking at a summons.
