Applying for a European Passport

Hi, has anyone successfully applied for a European passport and if so how difficult/complicated was it and did you do the groundwork yourself or get a solicitor involved. I’m lucky enough to have a French Father (now deceased) and Irish grandparents (also deceased) and think this opens up this opportunity to me.

Thank you in advance for any advice/tips. Anything will be welcome.

Well we got the DC Irish passports as DH is Irish.

I had to send my husbands birth certificate, but otherwise it was as easy as a UK passport.

There is no such thing as a "European passport". Different countries have different rules and requirements.

I'm sure there's some way without your DFs birth cert. You certainly won't need a solicitor.

You need to chose which one you want first, then get the application forms which are online.

I am on the Irish foreign births register, I haven't got as far as applying for a passport yet.

It was pretty easy, the form asks for various details and I had to order copy birth certificates / death certificates / marriage certificates for my parent and grandparent.

The hardest thing was finding someone to certify it who also had proof of their professional qualification. In the end I got a chartered engineer at work to do it because the IMechE sends them little membership cards.

Yes you have to check the requirements to become a citizen of that country (through descent) and see if you meet the criteria. There is usually a list of the type of documents you will need to provide and some of those may need to be legalised (depending on what your target country asks for).

Gather the documents and make an appointment or application via the embassy in this country. That's how I did it. It just took being organised and a bit of a wait.

Obviously I mean a French or Irish passport, I know there is not a European passport.
