Debt collection letter addressed to sibling

HappyHome648 · 05/08/2024 10:54

A debt collection letter, addressed to my sibling, has been sent to my property but my sibling has never lived at my address. Why would they send it here? This is now the third (two previous received over a year ago) debt collection letter that’s been sent to my address, intended for my sibling, is there something I need to be aware of/do?

A copy of the original signed contract was included in the envelope and I can see that they used their actual address when signing up for this service.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Speak to your sibling?

If you’re not in touch with your sibling, return the letter with ‘not known at this address’.

@HappyHome648 debts are sold at a fraction of their value to companies who will use whatever method is available to try an trace the debtor. Mobile phone contracts are particularly often dealt with in this way.

I assume you were linked to your sibling either by SM or some historic and perhaps long forgotten financial link.

Whether you tell your sibling or not you need to let the collection company know, in no uncertain terms, that they're barking up the wrong tree.

Has your sibling got credit using your address? Open it - which isn't illegal unless you stand to gain from doing so - then speak to your sibling.. Or I bet they would deny any wrong doing...

HappyHome648 · 05/08/2024 11:18

I have no idea if they have credit using my address, that’s my concern. I can’t speak to them as we are no longer in communication (funnily enough because they’re a problematic, financial disaster). I have tried to call the debt agency but they don’t accept phone calls, only emails.

My concern is that they be using my address to apply for credit but I’m not sure how I can find that out.

Check your credit score. Free on your banking apps..
Ime.

BarefootbyMoonlight · 05/08/2024 11:28

So send an email?

fgs don’t do as someone I know did - they believed that sibling was a fuck up so they swooped in with the big guns

only to later find out it was a scam by so-called creditor with a grudge against sibling to extort money and not in any way a legitimate debt

whether you can or do inform sibling, probably best to keep well out of it

you can ask any of the credit agencies about debts at your address - easy to do as pp suggests, even by phone right now

Email the company explaining your sibling does not and has never lived at your address (might help to include a pic of your council tax bill as evidence). If you have any contact details for your sibling include those but if not just say you are not in contact and ask them to remove your address from their system.

Send the letter back to the debt agency or to your sibling

Avidreader12 · 07/08/2024 07:43

Check your own credit file incase your sibling has a financial link to your address. Send the letter to the debt collection agency stating does not live here return to sender. That ensures they are aware they have got the wrong address. If you are on good terms with your sibling I would tell them about the letter but you have returned it to the company.

would i be correct in thinking

you and your siblings aren’t exactly… close

Sometimes they use agencies that track people down that cannot be located. It’s quite common in such cases for it to land at the siblings door.

TallulahBetty · 09/08/2024 09:42

Don't worry about it affecting you or your address. Credit report is linked to a person, NOT addresses. His credit report doesn't affect you unless you have a joint financial product.

Return the letter to sender, and call/email them if you can to advise he does not live there.

The Debt Agency have done a search and have found your address if you have same surname on electoral register. Email them or send back the documents by signed post stating this person is nothing to do with you and has never lived at your address and to stop sending letters. They probably are having trouble finding your sibling.
