Hello,
I'm looking for advice from anyone who has been in a similar situation. A van reversed into my brick wall, then the driver came out to check the van before driving off. I have video evidence and the van's number plate. The wall is badly damaged. I've reported the incident to the police, but I'm unsure about using my home insurance since I don't want my premiums to increase. Should I cover the repair costs myself and then take the driver to court? If anyone has had a similar experience, I'd love to hear how you handled it and what you would recommend. Thank you!

I think that your Home Insurers would pursue the claim through the van drivers insurance, as you have the registraion number and video evidence.

It might also be worth checking the gov website ( www.gov.uk/check-mot-status) web site to see if the van has a valid MOT, if it doesn't it may not be insured either and then the police may be a bit more interested (but not a lot🫥)

Your property has been damaged and needs repair. In my mind that's what insurance is there for. If it affects the premium then that's life. If the increase is silly money then ask a Meerkat for something cheaper.

Defnitely don't try and do it all yourself, it just won't be worth the hassle of any increase in premium. Just hand everything to your insurance and let them deal with it. That's why you have it in the first place. Much greater chance of success with them dealing with it.

Go through your home insurance with the evidence you have (video and crime reference number) and let them deal with it. Life's too short to deal with yourself.

Thank you for your replies.
The person came back today and gave his contact to our neighbour (who recognised the van and told the driver about the footage). He said he was sorry and would like to pay for the damage. He asked not to go through insurances.
But you are all probably right and I should just use the home insurance and that’s it.

I used to work in insurance , I actually wouldn't go through your home insurance as a lot of home insurers don't even try and get the money back they just pay out . Give him a chance to pay for it himself , give him 2pr 3 quotes and a timescale to pay up . If he doesn't go straight to his vehicle insurers with the footage they will pay out , they won't have a leg to stand on and your home insurers won't even know about it .

2 or 3 that should say !
