Van driver tried to blame me

Hi All,

Could you help? I will describe the incident.

I was driving over a small humpback bridge which curves to the right. The oncoming traffic has priority but as I was coming over the crest of the bridge, a transit van also started to cross the bridge. As we were both going at a slow speed, we both stopped (I had 2/3 cars behind me) and he started to reverse... straight into the motorbike behind him.

I pulled over to give my details as a witness (no-one was hurt, thankfully) and I distinctly heard the driver of the van try to blame me for "coming straight over the bridge". The motorcyclist took photos etc. and the van driver said "I just didn't see you" to the cyclist but I'm still concerned that the van driver will try and indicate me. Does anyone have any experience of this? Thanks so much!

he won't have a leg to stand on.

On your description, there was no contact between your car and his van. You didn't force him to reverse into the motorcyclist. He can try to blame you all he likes, but he won't get anywhere with it.

There are instances where a person can be blamed for causing an accident but it's rare.

ShutTheFuckUpCakes · 25/07/2024 17:06

The oncoming traffic doesn't have priority over traffic that's already on the bridge. Oncoming traffic only has priority over traffic that has not yet entered the bridge.

He's a twat and a terrible driver. What did he expect you to do, levitate out of his way?

And no, he won't get anywhere trying to blame you!

TonyeKnausgaard · 25/07/2024 17:07

The option to not make an unsafe manoeuvre was always available to him. You don't just blindly reverse without making sure it's clear.

TruthorDie · 25/07/2024 18:36

You didn’t make him. He made an error of judgement but isn’t owning it. I was queuing to pull out of a petrol station, car in front threw it into reverse and hit me. He was livid. I should have “known” he was going to do that apparently. But l can’t see the future and there was a car behind me anyway

Sorry pressed send too soon as toddler running wild

That wasn’t my fault either. I can’t see it going any where with your insurance companies

Thank you. I gave my details but then you just wonder if they're going to make up some kind of story afterwards!
