A geeky question for property lawyers

Have any of the property lawyers on here heard of a portions charge?

I provide technical legal support at a licensed conveyancers. This one had me and our team stumped.

It was on the registers of title and referred to in a document from the 19th century. It’s not a rent charge as one was mentioned in the same sentence.

No replies , how disappointing.
Still I guess the OP can rest safe in the knowledge that they're not the only ones not familiar with the term.

I'd much rather know what it is.

I think I've come across this before, it may have had something to do with a bride's dowry. If I remember rightly I think they were also referred to as marriage portions and could include a form of a charge on capital assets to provide a regular income like an annuity. From memory Jane Austen fan blogs were a useful source of info about this!

Of course. Makes perfect sense. Thank you @WhatWouldVimesDo .

Following @WhatWouldVimesDo comment, would it be where the term “widow’s portion” comes from?
