Convex Safety Mirror

My driveway is concealed and has no view in either direction, onto an extremely dangerous stretch of road. Although the speed limit is 50mph, that is still far too fast. When pulling out, it's literally a case of hoping for the best . Do I need permission to erect a convex mirror? Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks so much in advance ☺️

Goodness that sounds terrifying!

Don't know about the mirror, probably best to ask the local planning office.

Is there anything you can do to make the view better? Take down a hedge/wall for instance so it's less concealed and you have a wider view?

Thank you for your reply.

We've cut back the hedge as far as we're permitted, but can’t cut too far back due to birds nesting.

It's a nightmare.

Not permitted on the public highway but if you can erect it on your own land that will probably be ok but check with your local council highways department.

Why is the hedge so overgrown? Have you just moved in?

Ihateboris · 14/06/2024 13:54

It's not overgrown. It's cut back as far as is permitted due to nesting birds. The speed limit has been reduced to 50mph but this makes no difference.

Won't be permitted on public highway. I would make an enquiry to your local Planning Authority as to whether it constitutes development if erected on own land.

Local authority will want to avoid crashes as much as you, I would ask them, I'm sure they will be helpful.

I used to live very rurally and there were loads of convex mirrors, mostly attached to trees. Not sure if they had permission

Who owns the land opposite you, could you put one there?

The Duke of West owns the land opposite...and for many miles!

That should say Duke of Westminster!
