Lost deeds

My elderly parents have lost the deeds to their home. I offered to try to get replacements for them from the Land Registry, but LR told me that the property is not registered. It's an old property, they have lived there for many years and the mortgage is long paid off.
Does anyone know what happens in these circumstances? Can they register the property with LR and then get replacement deeds (who from?) Can I do it on their behalf? I have POA, but they still have capacity. Do we need to involve solicitors or conveyancers?

This might help.

Have you looked with them through all their paperwork at home to find anything with relation to a sale or a mortgage in the past. Which might help you find the location of the deeds.

Thanks. The deeds were held by solicitors, who then sent them to my parents' old address and they were never forwarded. This was some years ago from what I can gather...it's all a bit of a mess.

In that case it might be worth approaching a solicitor for advice.
