My husband's banking app shows MY credit report. What should I do?

Wasn't sure where to post this...

My husband and I have been together for 14 years now, and got married 6 months ago. Before marrying, our names were (using made up names for confidentiality) Alan Jones and Robert Evans. On getting married I took my husband's last name, so we became Alan Evans and Robert Evans. We already had a joint mortgage at the time so I changed my name with the bank in my local branch with marriage certificate etc.

Shortly after, we started receiving letters in the post addressed to Alan Jones and Alan Evans, which were both me! I was very confused by this. The following day, my husband signed in to the banking app we have for our mortgage account. On the app, there is an option to see your full credit report and credit score. In the past, I could see my credit report on my app, and my husband could see his credit report on his app (as it should be). However now my husband is greeted with MY credit report on his app, and I still have access to my own on my app too. He has had a good rummage through everything which has left me feeling very uncomfortable.

We have a lovely relationship, but there are a small number of things on my credit report he was unaware of like a laptop I was paying for on finance or a couple of missed payments for something when I was skint as I wasn't working for a short period. It has caused some uncomfortable conversations between us which weren't necessary.

I complained to the bank as soon as I learned about all of this, and they have sent me a final response letter acknowledging my complaint about the incorrect name and the credit report issue. However, all they said was they apologise for the inconvenience and they have changed the names so they are now correct.

Great - but my husband can STILL see my full credit report.

I'm not really sure what my next steps should be. If anyone has any advice it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance 🙂

Escalate complaint as a data breach and tell them that if not satisfied you will go to financial services ombudsman.

Thanks for the response.

How serious of a data breach is this in your opinion? Do you think, despite no financial loss, that I would be entitled to compensation for distress?

Depends who's at fault. The bank or one of the credit reference agencies ?

Karensalright · 28/04/2024 21:48

@creagle92 yes to compensation it was an invasion of your privacy.

When I complained to the bank, the woman on the phone blamed the credit reference agency. I called the credit agency and they said it was the bank's issue. I don't really know how this has happened.

I'd kick up a really stink over this!

A letter of acknowledgment simply isn't enough. They've allowed another person access to your personal information. The fact is happens to be your husband is irrelevant.

I'd also not be best pleased with him for snooping tbh. Although I do think it's important to be open re financials, it's equally important to respect each other's privacy.

My bank once messed up a change of address which was only discovered when I couldn't pass security with my actual address!

They'd been sending my statements to a strangers house in Pimlico!! I complained in the strongest terms and received compensation

Thank you for this - this is the kind of thing I needed to hear. I have asked a couple of people what they think and nobody seemed sure whether it was a big deal or not!!

Trust me - the awkward and heated conversations have been mostly because I've asked him not to look, and he has responded and told me not to lie!

Sorry to hear you had troubles, but glad that you got compensation from it. Was it an amount you were happy with?

@creagle92

Let me guess - trans union ?

Put in official Complaint to the credit reference agency

okaythensure · 28/04/2024 22:02

@creagle92 it wasn't enough to retire on 😂 but from memory I think they gave me a few hundred pounds.

This was quite a while ago though, and we'll before all the GDPR stuff so I think now it would be taken much more seriously.

For me its no different than your medical information being shared - it's private and confidential!

Hope you reach a happy middle ground with DH - that's a very frustrating situation for you to be in needlessly

Yes 😆
Do they have a reputation for being sloppy?

Thank you I definitely will do.

Complain to the ICO

kitchenhelprequired · 30/04/2024 08:34

Quite some years ago so pre GDPR but still data protection rules we applied for an additional loan via our mortgage provider. They sent all of our personal information by post to another customer who called us to say they knew absolutely everything about us. I reported and escalated to the CEO who offered £50 for the inconvenience. I took it to the FSA who said as long as there was no financial loss there was nothing they would do. We have a letter saying that if financial loss in the future could be attributed to the breach there would be a case against the mortgage provider. Just one of many legal protections you think there are which mean absolutely nothing in reality.

creagle92 · 02/05/2024 14:52

@Karensalright The bank has offered me £500 to apologise for the issue.
Do you think this is a fair amount? 🙂

Seems reasonable to me as no financial losses which i would expect to see covered.
