Think I’ve been caught speeding HELP

SnappyRoseExpert · 18/04/2024 20:01

It’s been 13 days since I’ve think I’ve been caught speeding and I’ve since yet to receive anything by post.Am I out of the woods or ?

No you’re not. They have 14 days (starting the day after the offence) to issue and post a letter about it to you - so taking into account postage times you probably have another 5 days or so until you are “out of the woods”.

TheTicklishPoster · 18/04/2024 20:08

Most likely, but if not and it’s your first offence you will likely be offered a driving awareness course with no impact on insurance and no points on your license. Just the inconvenience of a half day course and a fine (usually around £80).

Priminister · 18/04/2024 20:44

You haven’t said how fast you were going, what the speed limit was or how you got caught so I fail to understand how anyone can advise you.

Shade17 · 18/04/2024 22:15

As long as the car’s registered to you at your current address then you should be fine once you get to 14 days after the alleged offence. Just posting within 14 days isn’t sufficient, it has to actually be served within that time.

SnappyRoseExpert · 19/04/2024 07:17

For context my car dashboard advises me of speed limits and it said 50,I then drove past a 40 sign and a camera while I was slowing down so I believe I was doing roughly 47

Mumof1andacat · 19/04/2024 07:30

Why are you so worried about it?

0rangesandstrawberries · 19/04/2024 07:32

Did the camera flash?

BoobyDazzler · 19/04/2024 07:33

I’ve been caught speeding twice in the last 6 months - after 25 years with no points! Both times the letter arrived really quickly,
within a week or so.

Nevermindtheteacaps · 19/04/2024 07:33

Most police forces allow a 10 percent plus 2 margin of error -so 46.. so sounds like you squeaked under this.

If not, it's only speed awareness course at that level.

WonderingWanda · 19/04/2024 07:34

Same question as pp. Why do people get their knickers in such a twist. Sometimes even the most careful drivers take their eye off the ball and make a mistake....and others blatantly disregard the rules but either way it is what it is. Another cost associated with driving, just like if you accidently clip someone's car in a car park etc and your insurance will go up For first time speeding you usually get to do the speed awareness course anyway so it's not the end of the world as you won't get the points. If you already have points then more fool you.

You may be ok, i went through a speed camera in a 30 zone doing 36, i then downloaded a GPS speed app, drove at 36 and my partner said i was actually doing 32mph.

Most police forces allow 10% plus 3mph.

I’ve never been caught speeding as I am usually very alert and adhere to the limits which is why I am panicking so much about it 🫠

I would like to keep my license clean if possible and I suppose it’s in my nature to over think and worry about things like this

See this is why I’m thinking I’ve not been caught or been within the tolerances as it’s day 14 and nothing has arrived

Don't rely on your car dashboard. Ours has that facility but it's notoriously unreliable. Mine regularly tells me insane speed limits like 100 or 160. Or if I'm going round a roundabout near my house it picks up the speed limit on one of the side roads instead of the road I'm actually on.

MagpiePi · 19/04/2024 08:21

Not sure why you are so stressed about it.
You’re not going to get publicly shamed and paraded through the streets.

If you do get a notice then you’ll probably get offered a speed awareness course. They are actually quite good as you’ll learn about why it is bad to speed, and how to recognise what the speed limit is instead of relying on tech. You might end up being a better, safer driver.

BoobyDazzler · 19/04/2024 08:33

^^ quite!

I don’t think many people get through their driving life without being caught speeding at least once! (Or judging my most of my friends - multiple times!)

BobnLen · 19/04/2024 08:35

Sounds like the most you will get is speed awareness course so you will keep a clean licence

MagpiePi · 19/04/2024 08:37

@BoobyDazzler I’ve got a friend who has been constantly on 9 points for speeding and goes between doing courses and getting more points. Tbf, she is a dreadful driver - she recently had an accident that resulted in her being taken to hospital on the way to a speed awareness course. 🙄

hby9628 · 19/04/2024 08:39

I got a letter for doing 46 in a 40. I didn't even realise. Speed awareness course for me.
To be honest I think it will be a useful thing to undergo. Really we should be made to review our driving skills at some point.

There’s literally nothing to panic about, it’s not like you’re on 9 pts already. It’s a complete non-issue.

I’ve got a few friends like that too! Some seem to live in fear of losing their licence.

I was quite proud of my clean licence 🤣

Shit happens .

In many force areas, you wont get offered a course if you ve already done one recently, say in the last 2 years.

But its really not about the usual £100 fine and 3 pts (if you don't get offered the course) its the insurance premium hikes for the next 5 years that really punish you.
1 speeding conviction used to be ignored, no longer the case, my ins went up by 50% across a wide range of companies, on top of the increases we ve all seen.

Yeah, I’m not looking forward to that bit!
