Chased for FILs debt from estate after Gazette notice has ended

My FIL passed away in June. He had a small estate (around £16k) and we were advised probate wasn't required. It turned out he had a lot of debt which we weren't aware of so we listed in The Gazette and that notice ended at the start of October. Once all debts were paid out, my husband and his sister had around 3k each left. We haven't spent ours but SIL has. Yesterday we had 2 letters from CapQuest, one saying we owe £2800 and another for £790. We have no idea what they're for and they state they are being passed to Philips and Cohen. My question is, will we be liable to now pay this? I was under the impression that's what The Gazette was for and am stressing now. His sister is on benefits with no job and has made it clear she wont be paying as she cant afford it. It just feels unfair that my husband may now potentially have nothing.
Thanks

if you placed a Statutory Notice, creditors have 2 months and 1 day to respond. Speak to a solicitor.

AND a prove it letter as recommended by Money Saving Expert debt free board so you can see what the debt is for and if it was actually FIL's. They might be sending letters out to anyone with a name vaguely like the FIL's in the hope that someone will cough up to prevent hassle, especially in a situation where someone has died.

I've yet to meet a debt collector (which is what they are, whatever fancy titles they give themselves) with a shred of moral compass about chasing people.

The notices in the Gazette protect the executor from personal liability for any debts that emerge after the estate has been distributed. The creditor may still be able to claim any money owing from the beneficiaries, i.e. your husband and your SIL. You need to find out what this debt relates to and, if it is genuine, take proper legal advice. You should also be clear with CapQuest that you posted notice in the Gazette and they did not respond. That may be enough to persuade them to go away.
