any advice appreciated. Moved out of our home in December. LA inspected 4 January. Not returned bond. When I contact them they just say they will chase the LL. what can I do?

Are you in the UK? If so, your deposit should have been lodged in an approved scheme and you should have details of this.

Go through the deposit protection scheme - you don't need to wait for the landlord to get their act together, you can just claim the full deposit back and that starts the clock for them.

If your deposit isn't in a scheme, you can take them to court - have a look at the Shelter website.

Don’t you have the scheme details?

Greensleevevssnotnose · 24/01/2024 07:55

Bond isn't a word I have heard in the UK. Guessing you are Australian? Not sure if the rules there.

Thanks for prompt reply. I’m not sure if I still have the tenancy agreement, stupidly may have binned it when we moved. I assume it was protected as it is an established LA. If I can’t find it what is my next move? Yes I’m in UK

You can check if the deposit is held in one of the 3 government approved schemes, you'll need to give some information like your surname, the address of the property and postcode. It's really easy to find out.

Don't assume a 'reputable letting agency' will always behave properly. We let from a landlord who worked as an estate agent at a very upmarket agency, they didn't use the scheme, nor did they do any gas checks or any sort of inspection, in fact they weren't interested in their property at all, other than taking the rent every month, until we said we were moving and then they got very difficult, refused to engage with the referencing agency and just generally made things hard. We weren't in arrears, we'd kept the place nice, we just wanted to move after a traumatic time and they were pissed about losing the rent and having to find new tenants. I regret not going after them for the deposit they should have protected now. They should have faced consequences. I
Just wasn't in the right place to see it through and it's too late now I am.

It's your money, not theirs, find out where it is and chase it.

If the deposit is secured in one of the scheme, you need to ask for it back via the site. The landlord can do it too, but it make sense that the tenant has more incentive to make the move.
