‘Hit and Run’

My car was parked in work car park and was quite badly damaged when I returned to it and for the moment, I can’t drive it. It was a ‘hit and run’ in the car park. Insurance is dealing with it and I will contact them again today but does anyone know if it is a write off which I think it may turn out to be if I can hire a car and then claim the money back for that through my insurance as we won’t be able to buy a new car straight away? Getting to work is difficult.

There may be some CCTV footage so also looking into that. It is really annoying and unfair but at least no one was hurt. I have reported it to the police too.

Thank you.

my insurance includes a courtesy car

yours doesn’t?

PickledPurplePickle · 12/01/2024 06:20

Normally a courtesy car is included up until
the point the car is declared a write off

“quite badly damaged” in a stationary accident in a car park

and you think it will be written off??

Entirely possible. Depends on the car's age/value and the cost of repair.

No, they won’t reimburse hire charges but you may have courtesy car cover on your policy. If it’s a total loss they should deal with it very quickly and pay you out so start looking for a new car just in case.

Beware of these companies that rents out cars as part of your claim and ramp up costs there has been Few threads on here about it

SunnyWinterDay · 12/01/2024 15:20

That generally happens when they have the other driver details. Not in a hit and run.

Thank you, everyone.

Is a hire van on your insurance policy?
If not I would buy a new car asap and sell the repaired one as my van was damaged recently and it took two months to get the parts, they are in short supply.
A courtesy vehicle was included in the person who hit my van’s insurance and the bill was well over£2000 after 2 months - cars may be cheaper to hire but it was a shock how long the repair process took.
