Parking, parking, parking!!

Okay. This is just hypothetical. I wont even think of doing this....maybe? So I live in a council flat in our lovely village. We have been living here for nearly 2 years with very little problems with parking. There has always been available parking spaces during the busy summer months when events take place in the village on a weekly basis but there are the odd 'Please dont park here' notes given. However, last month, the large parking lot over the road which used to be free is now going to start charging people for parking. It's privately owned and the prices are sky high. Its been implemented because many people from around the area use it as a drive and drop off rather than for accessing the retail shops in the village. Now, we have a Resident Only Parking which is shared with resident visitors however, since the news of the new parking charges, people have been using our car park to avoid using the parking lot across the road. This will get worse in the summer time. Now, Ive had several instances where a car I do not recognise have parked at our resident car park during the general working hours and they keep coming back. Its inconvenient because I have no parking space for my car when I come back from running errands and its incredibly troublesome when you have a toddler to manage and adding on carrying groceries and other heavy bulk items. That parking space is part of my rental contract and I find it unfair that I am paying additional fees for parking when I am not even guaranteed it. I have already asked our housing provider to put up more signs and they have arranged for someone to do so but I am SO tempted to just slash the tyres of these cars who arent supposed to be parked there. Hypothetically, what can the police do to me if the owner of the driver accuses me of vandalism without proof? Im a wimp so I dont think I am capable of doing this, just to let you know...😂

Slashing tyres is your FIRST thought?! That escalated quickly...

A gate or bollards, getting a private company to enforce, putting up cameras would all be avenues to explore first, surely?

If you do go down the criminal damage route, be aware that dash cams record movement outside the car, so make sure to wear your balaclava...

Sparklfairy · 03/01/2024 10:18

You know, the offending car(s) can't move if you slash their tyres...

Torchdino · 03/01/2024 10:20

Of course you don't slash tyres ffs. Psycho. Speak to whoever you rent from and see what they're going to do to try and ensure you have access to the parking space you pay for.

Psychoticbreak · 03/01/2024 10:41

Might be less illegal to put a note on the car windscreen and if they ignore the note then the next tijme block them in.

ImFloatingInAMostPeculiarWay · 03/01/2024 10:44

I'm sure the OP wasnt actually going to slash their tyres, she just feels she wants to !!

bollards is probably the only thing you can do :-(

TempleOfBloom · 03/01/2024 10:48

Are other flats affected? I would put together a joint letter to the council or the management co and send it to the housing department, copied to your local councillor. Asking for restrictions to protect the parking you are paying for.

They need to implement a residents permit scheme or something.

Targetting individual parking won’t help as it is probably different people every day. Leave a note / block one in and the same thing will happen the next day.

Theunamedcat · 03/01/2024 10:50

Ask the landlord about lockable bollards

Lochroy · 03/01/2024 10:51

I know you haven't posted in AIBU, but you really should share a diagram and know the answer is penguin bollards.
