Refusal to insure

I hope this is the right forum. Please let me know where to post if not.

My dad has a complicated home set up with his own home, a commercial property that he uses as an office/shop front and a flat above that he rents out. Everything is in a good condition.

His previous insurers won’t insure him since he retired and is no longer using the shop fully as a shop. He can’t find any other insurers that will deal with it.

He has 2 weeks left of insurance. Not enough time to get a change of use for the shop from the council. What should he do? Is there anywhere we can turn to appeal to insurers? He can’t just be left uninsured, especially with tenants in the property.

He feels like his only option is to sell up but he’d hate to move, and I can’t imagine anyone will buy an uninsurable property. There must be something we can do?

Has he tried NFU? They seem pretty obliging in most situations, and farmers & landowners have about as complicated property insurance requirements as it is possible to get.

Have you spoken to a specialist broker? Or Towergate or Endsleigh?

GreenMarigold · 08/12/2023 18:43

Tried NFU, Endsleigh and Towergate, and about another 5 or 6 specialist insurers, none can help.

Try Tysers

LucyInTheParkWithDragons · 08/12/2023 21:28

Hiscox?

GreenMarigold · 08/12/2023 22:42

Thank you, we’ll try Hiscox and Tysers. But what if none of them will cover him?

Someone will, but I guess it will be expensive a broker will write a specific policy to cover what it needs and an underwriter will price it according to the risk
