Bedroom door locks in HMO

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me with an issue a family member is experiencing please.
They signed a joint tenancy agreement for a room in a shared house of 6 in London. It hasn't worked out at all well and she has asked the landlord's agent if she can leave but they have said no, not until the break clause in April. Obviously this isn't ideal and in the meantime she would like a lock on her bedroom door. As it is an HMO and joint tenancy is this something she can request the landlord to fit?
Is there any way she can legally leave the tenancy before April?
She can't tell the landlords agent why she wants to leave as it will likely result in issues for the other tenants, she just wants out.

I'm a few years out of date on HMOs but I believe a joint tenancy doesn't require locks on doors but individual tenancies do.

But a landlord can still install one. You are most likely to get a yes if she pays for it. HMO landlords are all about the profit from my experience

My son is in a similar situation at uni, landlord said no to locks because technically everyone has a right to go in each room. He has bought a motion detector camera so if anyone goes in his room it records. If they turn the wifi or electric off it won't work though. I think lots of people get into these situations without realising that locks aren't allowed

Thank you both, I appreciate your replies. I don't think the landlord will pay given his responses so far.

Unfortunately not. One of the tenants in my daughter's shared house was arrested due to what he had done to the other tenants but they were still not able to legally leave before the tenancy end and could not insist locks were put on their doors.

Unbelievable! What an awful situation :(

Luckily they only had a few months left on the tenancy. The landlord did agree to release them all early but psycho housemate refused so they all had to continue paying.
we took the hit and she sofa surfed with friends for a couple of months.

You can request a lock. Most LL of HMO's provide them as standard. You can leave house early but if signed a contract for 6 months you will need to pay 6 months rent or you will lose deposit from PDS and if that does not cover shortfall LL can make a small claims case. If there is a guarantor they could go after them as more likely they have money to pay shortfall.
