Expired licence

Hi please can anyone offer any advice .
earlier in the week I was involved in a non fault accident . I am a named driver on my husbands insurance .
We have only recently bought the car which is on hire purchase .
Whilst gathering our documents to send to the insurance company I have noticed that my licence has expired 2 1/2 years ago .
i am so angry at myself for overlooking this .
i understand that I will be not insured and will deal with the fallout , but are the insurance company likely to void my partners insurance altogether because of my stupidity .

It's your oversight not his. I wonder if he might have higher premiums for a while, though, if he made a claim.

Thank you for your reply . Do you know if the insurance company will still deal with this claim or completely cancel the insurance ?
if it makes any difference the other party has admitted full liability .

I’d deal direct with the third party’s insurer and tell your insurer that you’re doing just that. Their insurer will have a dept to deal with direct claims and will bend over backwards to help you as it reduces their costs. No-one will want a copy of your licence, just get it renewed ASAP.

How long does it take to renew a license, sorry I'm not figuring this out well, but could OP get it renewed right now, go online, submit the right kind of picture (passport one would do if < 5 years old) ? DS just got a passport renewed in 5 days, so probably a license is faster?

I just renewed my licence an it was back in two days. You have to have a valid UK passport though.

I don't know if it would make any difference. Is your licence actually invalid if you don't update the photo?

When you took out the insurance did they ask for driving license details?

I’ve sent off for my new licence this morning, and will be contacting the insurance company Monday morning when they re open.
Insurance company never asked for our licence details when we took out the policy .

Last year mine took 9 months to renew. Dvla are not known for turning things round fast.

My dad had this recently, we only found out his photo licence had expired (3 years ago) when he was applying online for his free bus pass. He didn't have a valid passport so we had to complete a paper form, get an up to date photo and send the forms off to the DVLA. He got his new licence through about 3 weeks later with no questions asked, phew! We were proper stressing about it.

Co-incidentally my dad was involved in an accident last year, was 100% no blame on his part as he was stationary at the time. The other party insurance paid out no problem but they didn't ask for his licence only his insurance details, not sure what the position would be had they asked for his licence.

I’m resigned to the fact now that our insurance will be cancelled . I have no idea why they want things such as employment details from us as well as our insurance details .
Its been A stressful past few days but I’m thankful that I wasn’t hurt and that I never caused an accident these past few years and injured some other innocent person .

I think it is unlikely to invalidate you insurance to be honest. (I work for the police and send peoples to court for that all the time)

the amount of peoples driving round with expired licence is A LOT! You will be surprised on that

9.9/10 the insurance company will always cover them but check with them like you say but I think you will probably be ok

OP you said on your other thread that it is the photo card that has expired. This is not the same as the licence itself expiring it is important to be clear on this.

@eurochick sorry yes it is my photo that has expired , therefore my licence is showing invalid .

Why are the insurance threatening to cancel when you are only just gathering documents? How do they know your photo is expired?
Just don't send the documents and tell them you will deal with the other insurance company directly.
I can't see how an expired photo would affect your insuance, renewing it is a formality there's no checks to make sure you are fit to drive, so you'd have had an accident regardless. I'm not sure the insurance company could prove they wouldn't have insured you if it had been sorted out.

I’m not sure why they are threatening to cancel . They are saying that it’s routinely questioned to ensure they have offered us cover on the correct terms .

We need to send them the code to access both of our driving histories .
Photo of driving licences front and back .
Proof of our employment .
All this needs to be done before 27th Oct . Before they start the cancellation process .

@johnd2 sorry forgot to add they don’t know yet that my photo has expired . They will do when I email them the code for them to access my driving history .

Our insurance company contacted me on Friday requesting I forward them a code to access both our driving history’s.
Photos of both front and back of driving licences and proof of employment .
This us when I realised that my photo licence had expired and is showing invalid on the dvla website .

sorry once again for not making it clear in my OP .

I had to re new by post as my passport is out of date . My new photo licence will still void my insurance (I presume) as it will be dated after the accident .

So basically you've reported a non fault accident, and they have responded with "please send us all this information by this date otherwise we will cancel your insurance"?
That sounds unbelievable, there's no obligation for you to follow through on a claim! I'd tell them you're claiming directly and you will confirm when it's all sorted.
I thought TV licensing were bad with their ridiculous letters but that's taking the Mick

You need to renew your driving licence periodically so the photo is kept up to date. Prior to photo licences I don't think you had to renew until you were 70.

It is a paper offence so to speak - you have an entitlement to drive, the licence will be renewed when you send it all in. It's not the same as not having a driving licence. I honestly doubt the insurance company would renege on the insurance. If they did I'd be taking them to the Ombudsman. If the police had stopped you and found this out and decided to prosecute you, you'd get a fine. No points. It's not bad, it happens to a lot of people as who honestly knows when their licence is up for renewal.

Where does it say they are cancelling the insurance policy, especially as you have not yet sent your photocard.
