Hello my mum passed suddenly at 45 5 weeks ago to suicide she left no will but she also has no estate. There is no money, nothing. Any money we've made from selling her stuff has gone straight back into getting her rented house sorted.
There possibly may be a couple more things but right now I know it's sounds trivial but we have air miles with British airways it would be enough to take us both somewhere to scatter her ashes where she loved.
I'm 22 myself did all her funeral etc but I'm getting out of my comfort zone here. All BA have said is solictor but I don't have money for that. I looked online at benificary and it says not needed if no estate so I don't know what to do ? Thanks

I'm very sorry for your loss.

If the value of the estate is less than £5k then it should not be necessary to go through the process but BA - in their defence - will not know that this is the only asset in the estate.

Your mother died intestate - please can I first confirm that she had no spouse or civil partner at the time of her death? The reason I need to know this is to make sure you are the next of kin. Assuming there is no spouse or civil partner, you are next in line to apply for Letters of Administration. This can be done by completing form PA1A.

Thank you for reply yep no suppose just me really ! She did have her mother but she's 72 and unwell herself. So with that form I should be able to go through BA. Even selling her stuff we've made £1k plus I've kept an old laptop that's it. She didn't have much bless her.

Her mother ranks after you in the order of who can apply for Letters of Administration. Only a spouse or civil partner would be ahead of you in the chain. So you're good to go ahead and complete the form.

Can I check there are definitely no other beneficiaries though? As she was intestate, the only other beneficiaries would be any other children she had (including adopted but not step children). It's the only thing you will need to be careful about if you become the personal representative settling the estate.

Google headforpoints- they have done threads about this and there was a legal case I think

Add yourself to the household account and use them- they won't know she is dead was the main view . DONT contact BA about it.

FSTraining · 04/10/2023 17:39

@VivaLaVolvo This sounds like an easier option for the OP than the intestacy route! And as the OP is probably the sole beneficiary, I don't think anyone is going to make a fuss...

Damn that would have been easier but I've already contacted them! My mother was not linked to my account but I was to hers so that may be okay
